My first CONFEDERATE button!

We got permission to do this house, possibly 1880's, at first it seemed like just an average nice day. Matt pulled a 44 merc, we got some wheats, victorian looking brass decorative doo-dads and the button. It wasn't until I got the button cleaned I realized it wasn't another victorian age bit, but a Civil War button.

Turns out to be a CSA Staff Officier, seems it's on the rare side too, I could only find a couple other examples to match anywhere online.

I do love it when the "junk" bag produces something exciting when you get home!

Hey Jim, that is a GOOD one, Alberts book # CS42, my 1996 price guide states $750+. Man what a yard find, blows the silver coins away! HH

Hey Jim, how are ya? Just wanted to tell you about your button.its one of the rarer varieties of confederate staffs. If you sent it off to Leonard Short for cleanup and repair(get the dent out fix the rim ).The button would easily be in the 1500.oo range. As is might be worth 700.oo It's still an Awsome find , but the 100 bucks the cleanup and repair would cost you, sure would increase its value for you.I know you don't really collect civil war relics, but most any big collector would pay dearly for a pretty example of that button.Leonard Short could make that thing gorgeous again.Its just something to think about since I didn't think you collect. Congrats on the Awsome find man, that's sweet. Oh and can I ask what type of camera you use, it looks to be a good one, I like it.

Yes it is fun to "re-discover" finds in the pouch when home cleaning up. Talking about cleaning up...others know more about the "do I invest in restoration or leave it as is" debate..Sure is nice button. You are back at that house looking for more, right?

Pete...that just seems like SUCH a alien concept, having it restored. I normally hunt coins over relics, and I have a basic policy of leaving coins unaltered, let the buyer screw it up. "Restoring" coins is just about the ultimate evil in that world...that's how little I know about about CW relics...restoration is acceptable practice? hmmmm. And the cam That's Canon Vixia R20, still learning how to use it, it's no point and shoot toy like the flip cams I used to use.

Thanks for the info everyone, the irony here is, despite digging the deep south for 3 years I have found shockingly few CW age things...even this came from Charleston County, not Colleton County where I live and do most of my diggin. I was planning to keep my 1st Confederate button, just for the novelty of the find...but a sale like that could do a little bit of good for the fam here these days.

I understand you think it's an alien concept since you've always delt with coins, but yes relics are different in some respects.Like coins you don't want to over clean anything but a coin cant really be repaired like a button or plate.With relics if a collector has a choice between an artifact that's all mangled or dented compared to one that looks nice, he ll pick the pretty one every time. When someone is going to pay 1000. OO plus for a button they're going to want it to look nice.Right now there is only one or two great artifact preservationists in the country that can do amazing work.Leonard Short is the best.We are so fortunate to live in a time where there is an individual like him that does the beautiful work he does.It would be a shame not to use his services on that button.You'd be amazed at what you got back after he finished with it.Its your button but I've seen first hand what he has done to junk relics and their values. So trust me it's not like coins in that respect.That button dolled up would be worth hundreds more , and much easier to sell if you wanted too. Collectors are much more reluctant to shell out big bucks for relics when they're damaged, even if it's only a little bit.

Great CSA button find and love the video!! I can't believe you guys don't use gloves to dig with.

By the way, my first CSA button I found was a Script " I " button. I didn't even know what it was,
I was hunting a friend asked me if I had found anything and I said some sort of button.
When I showed it to him, he started jumping up and down and got short of breath and said do you
know what you just found. I said yea some sort of button, he said after he cleaned it off with water
and a tooth brush, a Script " I " button. I later realized what I had found and now it is my CW button
box.
