You know, this thread has been on my mind since I last posted.
If I were advising anyone young, I would say this:
Expect that the 'game' will change at any given point. I've learned that the hard way in life. For a while, everything will be going just perfectly, and then WHAM! Someone or something comes along and changes the game you've been in by changing the rules or the game itself.
I could give you a million examples about how the game has been changed on people that never expected it. It seems to me that the game and the world is changing faster than anyone would have guessed. At the same time, someone or something that changes the game is nothing new...the blacksmiths at work in 1900 would have never guessed that their profession would be largely unneeded in just a few years due to the popularity of the automobile.
As a recent example of having the game changed in my life, I had a pretty good little business going, until someone decided our town needed a new $39 million dollar library. That person decided that they needed to buy and redevelop a commercial area for the new library, and called the owner of the property, and told them of their intentions. The owner ended the lease where my business was set up, tossing us and lots of others out with just a month's notice. In the mean time, my wife, the top earner where she worked was told basically, to take a cue, and find a new job, and that they could hire a 23 year old to run their multi-million dollar business for just 1/3 of what they were paying her. The long and short of it is that one day we were doing fine, the next day, someone had changed the game on us. The library project is almost completely dead now, and my wife's former employer just fired my wife's old boss, severely demoted another, and fired the two gals that took my wife's position for "gross mismanagement of the company and ethical fraud". Seems that the new people didn't understand my wife's old job, and started billing Medicaid without any documentation whatsoever...so much for cutting one of the most valuable employees you have had for the past 12 years, just to save a few bucks. I'd be surprised if they are still in business one year from now.
I'm not saying that the game will be changed on you...but just be prepared and expect it, if and when it changes on you. Have yourself a good parachute, a strong resume, and stay out of consumer debt.
Oh, and one more thing: Make time for fun stuff in your life...lots of it...play just as hard as you work!!!!
