Hi all I got out with some friends today to an old foundation site.I have hunted this site before in the spring and summer but never in the winter.During the warmer weather the grass is to thick to really search effectively.....so there is one good thing about the snow.I wasn't there long when I found an old spoon.....little further I got a crusty large cent.......then about 10 feet away in a real swampy area I got a weak signal and dug an awesome 1837 seated 1/2 dime....missed the capped bust by one year ! This is my first ever 1/2 dime find and my oldest US silver yet. ;D

Don

Early Year? I was thinking Braided Hair variety, but I could be wrong. Anyway, fantastic finds all around! With 2 feet of snow on the ground all I can do is read the forums and dream about my next outing!

That is one of the nicest seated half dimes I have seen in a while! I will say it again, those seated coins are my favorite!
Congratulations,
peanut

That is a really nice find in decent shape.

Nice finds, musta been killer hackin thru that frozen ground here in upstate ny!!!!!!

Looks like it was dropped the same year it was minted. The detail is wonderful. Great find--good ears!

WOW that is in AWESOME shape!!!! :headbang: :headbang: :headbang:

I vote Banner, there was only 1,405,000 minted between large and small dates combined!!! In my 2006 Red book it has 1837 half cent for EF $200 & AU $450!!!

:icon_thumright: Awesome detail on that half dime. I would have done backflips. Way to go!

Thanks y'all. The LC is ither a braided hair or matron head....to worn to tell for sure. The ground here in NY is frozen solid in some spots but in others its not frozen at all.The area I found these coins has a thick layer of matted grass and some snow that I think insulates it and keeps it from freezing. The 1/2 dime was in a swampy area that was frost free and wet mud.I hunted a field the other day and found that some areas had 6-8 inches of frost but just a few feet further only had 1-2 inches of frost.I never used to hunt in the winter....always figgered it was to much work and a waste of time......I've changed my way of thinking now.

Big congrats on that half dime.....one of the coins on my "to find" list.....awesome...now you must find the half disme
