Today was my first time using a metal detector... I was digging up bottle cap cities and wads of foil. I never realized how much foil is on the ground until it is all you find. A woman asked me if I have ever tried the beach and I told her it was my first time and I'm not very good at finding anything besides trash. I showed her all of my pocket trash. After a while of only finding trash I decided to give up and leave the park, that is when the sweet little old woman started emptying her change purse and kicking dirt over it. She said to me "don't give up now kid, they are just starting to sink in." And as she was leaving the park and I was finding the coins she scattered around for me she said "it sure beats bottle caps."

It made my day.

Wow, awesome story and she is right! Keep at it, listen to the differences of what things sound like and once you get to know your detector you'll know what to dig and what not to. Best of luck to you!

Welcome to the Wild World of Metal Detecting ! Enjoy the ride .

That is a great story. Keep at it learn your machine. You will find trash but the good stuff will come.

That's cool. Your gonna love it when you find your first gold ring. Find Someone to hunt with. It gets a lot better when someone is there to see your excitement and to boast to when you do find a ring. Welcome To dirt Fishing. Remember all that foil will one day turn into a gold ring.. Happy Hunting. great story

That is AWESOME... :) May God Bless that Lady for her kindness!

That is so great!

Best story I've heard in a while...she's right keep at it and don't give up. Trust me we ALL went through this stage at some points and time...all the silver, gold and coppers you see posted are of people who started just like you! Do some research make yourself a coin garden with some other metals practice practice practice. Everyday I got out is still practice after 8 years some days u learn new things...and if you want gold... You won't mind foil...keep at it!!

That is so cool!!!!:laughing7:

That's a great story. It's nice to hear about people who are Detector friendly.
What Detector are you using and where are you from. The are a ton of instructional videos on line, and people who may live close to you who may show you a few tricks.

Welcome to the land of pull tab maniacs! Keep in mind that you have to dig trash to get treasure. Every time you put the trowel in the ground you have a chance of digging something great. Good luck!

Cool, dont know what kind of machine you have but, remember the sounds of each find, after a while you will get the hang of it

Dig everything, and keep hitting the same spot until you find treasure! That nice lady might of thrown a quarter on top of a gold ring and you found the quarter, 3 inches down was the gold ring. Keep that in mind and dig until you don't hear anymore. Then buy a better machine and dig all the signals your first machine could not find! Ha, sounds crazy but after a couple years digging you'll see what I mean. Remember, most treasure is about location, location, location.

Good luck to ya!

It will get better....

What a sweet woman. Thanks for sharing your story. I'm a newbie, too, and while I don't know much about detecting yet, I do know it is a highly addictive and pleasurable hobby. There's a special feeling that comes when you uncover little relics of past lives: a tiny toy truck at the base of a tree, for example, knowing that a hundred years ago some little boy was plowing the dirt with it. Best of luck to you.

NOW THERE IS SOMETHING YOU DONT HEAR EVERYDAY ...COOL.

Little lady could have had someone in her life that was a detectorist, and she knows what we go through to enjoy the hobby... good job by her, and you!

I flipping love old people! They are so cute and I love the stories. Some are just the biggest grumps, but they're old....

If your finding foil your doing it right.
