Primary Interest:
Metal Detecting
I went back to the inactive farm field where I previously found some colonial items, including some slick coppers, buttons, round balls, and a key. I spent about an hour and a half with nothing but unidentifiable rusty metal items. I texted my wife that I was heading home shortly and that I was getting skunked. I thought I would give it fifteen more minutes and just zig-zag a bit through areas I had already spent some time gridding. After about five minutes, i got a mixed mid- to high-tone, with a jumpy but generally high VDI reading. It sounded deep, so I started digging thinking I might have a button. I was happy to see it was a coin, but started mentally preparing myself for another slick copper. A few hours after getting home, I gently scraped off the dirt. While in poor condition, I was pleased to see King George II, my first. It is a 1749 farthing, which I understand is a bit less common than the halfpenny.

During my dig, I also found this small item. I am wondering if this is some sort of clothing fastener, like a button. it must be of decent metal, as there is no corrosion. I am not thinking colonial, but I really have no idea. Anyone come across one of these?

Thanks for checking out my post. Happy hunting!

The mystery piece could be a clothing fastener or a jewelry fastener such as this modern example.pass through fastener.webp

Wow! 1749 Farthing. Now that's a sweet find. Congrats !!

2 nice finds on your way home. Happens a lot. Some guys don’t detect while walking back to the car. I always seem to find something while I’m leaving an area. Congrats on your saves.

Nice old copper, congrats! :icon_thumleft:

Nice find. Reminds me of a piece to a watch chain.

That's exactly what it is. Used on the end of a pocket watch chain.

Its is off a fob watch chain.

Thanks for the ideas. It never ceases to amaze me how quick you all can come up with an I.D. These ideas both look very plausible, though I am leaning toward the watch chain piece. Thanks again.

Yup, and many are gold. Acid test time! :icon_thumleft:

The connector ring on it is a gold color and has no corrosion. I am hoping it is precious metal. Thanks!

I always swing the detector on the way back to the car, as I too have had some good finds on the way out. In fact, sometimes I think I would have been better off and saved a lot of time if I just showed up to my spot and immediately walked back to the car swinging.:laughing7:
