Detector(s) used
bounty hunter time ranger
Well thanks to tomharris76 and vanoldschool for getting me into this hobby. Tomharris76 came up on saturday and went metal detecting with me. I just bought a bounty hunter time ranger from him so I thought i would try it out. Before we got started Tom said to me I would kill for an indian head penny today. We went to a near by park and my first coin was a 1971 half dollar and we found other newer coins. We left there and went to an old abandoned house i knew of and found junk. We got back in my truck and seen a farmer in a field and stopped and asked him if he knew of any old homesteads we could check out. He thought for a second and said well when i was growing up in the 1960's i could remember an old house being tore down. So he pointed us in the direction. When we got there we found broken glass jar lids. We searched for a while and found junk then went into some nearby woods and found nothing. Tomharris76 said lets go back to where those jar lids were and look some more. When we walked back over there we were only detecting a few minutes when i got a signal. I then dug up a coin and wiped off the dirt and seen an indian head and yelled "OH YA". Tom looked over at me and asked what did you find? I said it is a indian head penny from 1898. Tom came over and looked and said right on thats a good way to start detecting. Well im hooked now. And i'm sure in my wifes head she's still hearing me talk about it because i think i have told her the story 100 times. Sorry no pics still trying to figure out the camera.

I still remember my first IH too (1874), and I still love finding them. Great design.

Breaking the 1900's barrier is always a good way to start. Kudos!

Great find. Way to go; like a great shot in golf, that find will keep you going back for more and better items. My first few times out I was lucky to find a few clad coins and a ton of pop tops.

I'm still in awe of how your first time ended up. Just so everyone knows the pic of the IH doesn't do it justice. When I saw it straight out of the ground it looked like someone dropped it yesterday. Nice job, let's get together again.

This is a great hobby, congratulations. Go back over that place, odds are it's holding more.
