FINALLY JOINED THE 1800s CLUB!
Found three Queen Victoria British penny's metal detecting an old homesite in VA that's off a trail which used to be a carriage road in the 17th and 18th centuries.
I've been trying to find an 1800's coin for over a year and a half, and I finally found not one but three!! Two were in the same hole and the third was about a foot away.
After we hiked to the site and I pulled out my detector it started down-pouring. I was ready to pack up after a few minutes but my girlfriend said we should give it a good shot and 10 minutes later we pulled out these three 1800's coins. As soon as we found the first one the rain stopped and the sun peaked through the trees. It was surreal. Super excited and currently my favorite find so far! We were jumping up and down in the rain!
I really would like to clean these as much as possible to maximize detail. Would also prefer an even coat instead of the splotchy oxidation, but I am going to tread lightly with these and will take advice from people that have experience preserving coins that have been in the ground 100+ years. Any advice on how to maximally clean the coins without removing any detail would be greatly appreciated. I will coat them with renaissance wax after I feel they are as clean and as detailed as they will get. I have an electrolysis set up, but am hesitant to try that on these coins. Really don't want to mess up any detail because they are my first 1800's coins. However, I'm not concerned about value being lost by cleaning them because I wouldn't sell them and I'm aware they aren't worth too much anyway.
Any info is appreciated!
