With all this talk on whether or not clad common-date Ikes and copper Memorial cents are worth holding on to, I've decided to list a roll of random clad Ikes on Ebay and a box of copper cents as well. I'm listing the cents today and the Ikes end tomorrow. I figure this way I can get a real idea of whether or not you can actually sell these coins for over face value. Anyone tried this or think it's a good idea? Here's the link to the Ikes:

Good luck Dr. Detector ! They will go over face value for sure. There is an
Ebayer that regularly lists 25 Ike lots, and Ive seen some of his go for $50+ dollars,
and very commonly in the $35-40 range.

Its not much, but upwards of 2 dollars per coin is a nice profit for sure in bulk. Man you
got some nice sales from your fancy serial numbered bills :) Good job !

haha, thanks! Actually I really search $1 and $2 notes more than any coin denomination, believe it or not. I do it to make some extra cash since I'm gonna be going back to school in the spring I think. It's crazy how much some things go for on Ebay!

You might not do as well as you could you listed that the pictured coins are not the coins you will be getting. This will make some potential bidders think twice.

I have seen many ebay coin dealers with lots of negatives from bait and switch using the same thing.

On average base, 100 IKE's will go for $110 to $140 on EBAY. Usually around $118 or something like that. Expect a $20 proffit per 100 or about $1.20 a piece.

Selling 1 roll might get you a little more proffit per dollar.

I have seen 1000 IKE's go for $1150 thru $1350

when searching dollar bills, do you save the older series bills too? do you see any wheresgeorge bills?

Here ya go Dr.Detector and Coolcash :)

I wasnt exaggerating, I was lowballing. Just a recent few... check all his sales. Some huge profits from Ikes.

That second one fetched $75 ! ( $3 bucks a coin with S+H) Please let me know
if Im missing something. Looks like random dates, coins pictured not what you get..etc.

Wish I had a few hundred IKES :)

I find it hard to believe this. Probably beacuse I only pay face value. What an eye opener. Thanks.

Looks like I might do a little listing, I have almost 900 IKES. I started dumping them last month, turned in 400 already >:( I will stop for now.

Anyone want to buy some IKES?

cyberdan, I know exactly what you mean LOL.

Dont get me wrong, there are others selling Ikes too, and it doesnt
look like they do as well as this guy. I was just trying to show the
possibilities.

From what I can deduce, the 25 coins and being a wide range assortment of
dates and mints is the winning formula. Im sure collectors are buying the
lots, and getting a nice variety instead of a bunch of the same dates.

Cant hurt to try. Just a listing fee at risk. Be sure to charge enough shipping and
set the starting price as to not lose out on the deal.

I wont even mention what Ive been selling 2003+ rolls for. OOPS I said too much :)

Good luck !

Well it ends tonight so I'm hoping it goes for a good bit then! Wow my listing is VERY similar to that other sellers...aside from the fact that I am selling 20 rather than 25. If I get even $1.50 per coin I'm gonna be mad cuz I've been dumping them for face! I'd heard they sell for over face at some places but just had to find out for myself. This is what I do with my non-key 50+ year old nickels, also (sell them by the roll on Ebay). It's odd to see the wide range of final prices they sell for, too. And I haven't changed the starting price, shipping price, picture or description in over a year! Sometimes there are no bids, and sometimes they go for $15-$20 a roll.

As far as whether I save older series notes from the Ones I search....99% of the notes I search are from the Federal Reserve so I don't really ever get any silver certs. Older series FRNs though...if they are pre-1985 I will save them and try to sell them in a lot. However, even those don't sell on Ebay so usually I just dump them with everything else. Obviously if they are star notes or rare blocks yeah I'm gonna save them and sell them individually but normal print runs no I don't really do anything with them. You lookin to buy Coinlover? Message me if you are cuz I've got about a hundred 1963 through 1993 notes I've saved cuz they are all nice shape.

And about wheresgeorge bills, yeah I get them all the time. I have an account there and enter the notes I find since circulating money has always interested me. Hope that answers your questions!

Woo Hoo, looks like you made 50 cents. I don't feel so bad that I dumped $180 worth a month ago. Good luck on your other auctions.

Can't blame a guy for taking a little profit!
Well done.

This thread has been fun to follow. I say milk the Ikes for all they're worth!

Ah well Dr. , not to be on that one it looks like. I'll bet you
can send that roll for about 3.00 in a bubble mailer. Net you
another 1.50. With Ebays fees and Paypal, you'll probably break
even.

That other guy obviously has a good marketing method and knows
what he's doing. Getting outside traffic to your auctions instead of
Ebay regulars is the whole secret. Takes a little work and effort but
it makes a big difference.

Good luck on your future auctions !

Wow!

I have just over 100 IKE's. Probably will just save them for now...

Have some Uncirculated original mint wrapped rolls of 2003 and 2004 halves I found for face.... might sell some of those.

OK so they did not do well at all. Whoever thought I could ship them in a bubble mailer for $3...well I was thinking that too, but since it came to 1 lb 0.3 ounce it cost $5.20 and that was the cheapest (parcel post). So, here's what I LOST:

Gross income : $25.00
Original Cost : $20.00
Ebay Fees: $ 1.12
Paypal Fee: $ 1.03
USPS Parcel Post (the cheapest) shipping: $5.20

Net Loss: $2.35

And I even reused a bubble mailer (which would have been another $0.42)

So, even though the buyer paid over face value for them, the seller (me) lost money. I'm going to try selling 100 of them in order to save on shipping costs. If I still lose money then I'm going to be convinced that I simply can't sell them for a profit and they will be spent or dumped.

Now let's hope that box of copper cents does a little bit better!

DrD

Thanks for sharing. It was enlightening, and a lesson for ALL of us.

Sorry you didn't do better.
