MY OLDEST COIN IN 17 YEARS OF DIGGING "1600'S"

Hooked up with my diggin buddy Tim and we hit one of his large acreage places 400 acres and well I got my oldiest coin and he scored his oldiest coin as well , I am learning the Manicore ,hung up my ctx and made a custom program for coins with some field tweeks and glad I did ,. Tim scored a clipped Reale to start the day and the he hit a 1695 copper we where both shocked and after a few buttons I hit a 50 on the vdi and to my surprise I found a "COBB" I about fell over . And I scored some nice buttons , one I have soaking I beleive it is an eagle and also scored a dropped Sharps and a musket ball . So it was day that next time will be hard to top !

...Congratulations on that find ... the pics are a bit fuzzy, but there's enough detail visible to give this info: ... Your 1 real cob was struck at the Spanish colonial mint, Mexico City, Mexico, most likely in the early-to early-mid 1700s under Philip V ... the main give-a-way is the design of the tips of the cross, which was exclusive to the Mexico City mint. The cross ends are flared, with either a ball or a fleur de lis tip (see diagram) ...

... A closer examination of the shield detail would possibly help narrow the date ...it appears to be PH II (1700 - 1724 / 1724 - 1746) ... Mexico ceased cob production in favor of milled coinage in 1733 ...

...correct weight for this 1 real would be (appx) 3.4 grams, but yours could weigh a little less, as these cobs were often clipped in circulation ...

Congratulations! What a great site. In 50 years the oldest I have is a 1754 1/2 real.
