My oldest find. It's silver. It's a coin. And it's British.

It's a 1844 British sixpence....
Now before you all go "Pffffffffffft..that ain't old", think about where I found it.
British colonists first settled in New Zealand during the early part of the 1800's.
The town I live in was settled in 1841, and the park where I found it dates back to
1850. Now I'm not saying it was dropped in 1844 but it is not a heavily worn coin
so I would like to think it has been in the ground for.......oh I don't know..........Ages ;D
In early 1840, Captain William Hobson, the first Governor of New Zealand, extended British laws to New Zealand. This meant that certain sections of the Imperial Coinage Act, 1816 became relevant to the new colony. This allowed for the standard gold, silver and bronze British coins to circulate in New Zealand alongside the existing variety of foreign coins. British coins were made legal tender in terms of the above act by the passing of the English Laws Act in 1858. New Zealand first minted it's own currency in 1933.

You give a pretty good idea under what challenging conditions we're detecting here in Down Under.
Thanks to you I see that good though not exactly old NZ is yielding. BTW, I used to be acquainted with Bill Hobson's great great .... granddaughter. She's an awesome person.

Nice find good history lesson :icon_thumleft: there was 2 versions of the 1844 silver Vickie. Good hunt Dd60

A British 1844 Sixpence (small 44), uncirculated and in absolute mint condition could fetch up to £210 GBP. If it has been circulated but still in good condition, it might fetch anything from £10 to £75 GBP.

A British 1844 Sixpence (large 44), uncirculated and in absolute mint condition could fetch up to £250 GBP. If it has been circulated but still in good condition, it might fetch anything from £15 to £90 GBP
