I've completed my very first hunt today & am really excited about my finds! They may not be super valuable but finding them was so much fun!

The first thing I found was a 2001 dime. I forgot to take a picture of it before hand but it was pretty tarnished. Still is to a degree but I'm working on it.

The second thing I found was an Ax head! What made this really cool form me was that a root from the tree it was under had grown through the hole where the handle should have been!

I'm working on cleaning it up & will attach a picture of the progress later.

The downsides I found with my Garrett ACE 150 was that, even on a lower sensitivity, it seemed to consistently pick up "Iron" signals but would lose them after I dug the spot. My dad had mentioned that the cause may have been because of the region I'm in. Would Georgia red clay cause the detector to go off like that?

The Ax head registered as "Coin" so I'm not sure what kind of metal it's made of yet. Any ideas or guesses?

Your axe head is made of iron and probably dates from the 1800s. At least the early 1900s. Nice find for your first time!!!

Love those old axes!

cool finds! if you are running the ace 150 i would suggest notching out the iron..maybe start one notch below the nickel...big will read as as coins.

Welcome to T Net! Great first finds! Glad you are enjoying metal detecting!
I haven't found an axe head yet.

Cool axe head! What part of Georgia from you from? I'm a little bit south of Dublin.

cool stuff. keep on diggin' :icon_thumleft:

That's a great first hunt. Many guys and gals with years of experience have yet to dig a nice old axe head. So way to go!

That axe is old, nice 1st finds. The iron beep you dug was a false signal. It's normal to dig false signals, doesn't happen often but it does happen occasionally.

Happy hunting...

Your false signal might be a "hot rock/coal" maybe, are you using a pro pointer too?

Thanks everyone! I really lucked out with the ax head it seems. :)

I'll be going back to the area that I found it tomorrow (got rained out right as I found the ax head) and I'm really looking forward to seeing what else I can find!
I'm going to be reading my manual a little more this evening & trying to learn a little more about the different ways I can work the detector.

I'm in Henry County. About 30min drive south of Atlanta. Do you ever find civil war items?

There was a LOT of coal around the ax and could be in the other parts of the yard I was searching in. I don't have a pro pointer yet but I'm getting the feeling that it's probably going to be an investments I make soon. Lol

DianaPrince, don't clean your coins/objects in the sink, all that dirt/sediment can stay in the drain and clog it. Best to clean in a tray or container of sorts and then dump it outside.

Congrats on your ax head! :hello2: :blob9: :hello2:

My hatchet head and my big railroad spikes are some of my fave dug finds! Dug the handle to my ax head 20 yards away, just lucky it had a few metal brads in wood handle, lol. Have fun & keep us posted on new finds! :cat: Andi

Outstanding Diana!

I like the axe head. It must have been one tough thing to dig with a tree root going through it.

Cool finds :)
U can clean up and handle the axe head and re use it to split wood :) I always like finding useable stuff

Oh wow! Thanks! You know I hadn't even thought about that. >.O
Glad I read that before I started really working on it :)

It was pretty hard :)
I wasn't sure what it was for a while but I knew it wasn't natural with the way the corners were so sharp. I saw the tree root & & thought it was a handle in tact. When I reached in to try & pry it up though, I saw it was going through both ends of my find & that's when I realized what had happened.

I can't wait to get back out today & see what else I can find!

Hi Diana wish we lived closer Im trying to find other women to hunt with Im in Mass.

I didn't realize you could clean up rotted iron axes and tools and reuse them. I thought the iron would be weaker?
I have found quite a few things like axes, pick axes and hoes and never knew what to do with them.
