✅ SOLVED Mystery faceplate

This plate was dug up in the yard surrounding a house built in 1900. It measures 4.25" by 3.25". It has an obvious key hole towards the bottom. The words Corbin (I assume Corbin, KY) and USA are stamped on the front. There is a number on the back that I think reads 523, but I can't be sure. It reminds me of the front of a post office box, but I've also seen mortices that looked similar, but those seem less ornate than this.

looks like an old door lock on my grandma's house
