Greetings from Sacramento, Ca.
I was doing some work in a home where the owners had just moved away. They left this object/tool/carving, take your pick, on a shelf in one of the bedrooms. It immediately caught my eye and I have been trying to figure out what it is, exactly, ever since. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you,
John

Seriously weird conglomerate of rock, probably a much softer one worn out to leave that hole. Or it could have been made by a mussel. I've seen them in Washington on the beach, but I don't know if the mussel made the hole in mud and was fossilized or actually bored a hole in the "soft" rock. Probably bored. In both senses of the word.

Thank you for the replies!
I'm beginning to think on the same lines you are, that it is a naturally occurring oddity, which it seems to be. However, if you look at the new picture I took at a better angle, you'll see three smooth impressions that my fingers fit into nicely. I thought perhaps this stone was held in one hand while a fire-starter stick was inserted into the perfectly round hole.
Any more thoughts?
Thanks again.

Ewwwww.... Brezzie. It looks like you are poking a hole in a monkeys head. :icon_pale:

LOL, Well, I've been told I walk softly and carry a big stick, in this case a mean screwdriver!

HighPlains, is it Fred Flintstone's bowling ball?

:laughing7:

I agree with the posters (CivilWarStory ) find being natural.
Sometimes they are manmade down here. This is a photo of relics at Smallwood's General Store in Chokoloskee.

I want in on the holy, uh, holey rock thing! This came from a beach in Oregon, and there were a lot of them. We had flown there, so I couldn't take the ones I really wanted. You can see a mussel shell in one of the small holes, but like I say, I don't know if it made the hole or just took up residence.

Mine is holier than thou's.

Breezie: It is smaller, so it has to be Wilma's. And she only used it on Sundays.

Just as a general musing on firestarters, wouldn't it make more sense to use wood as a holder on the top? Wouldn't the wear and tear on the shaft be much less? With a sandstone rock holder, one may only get 1 fire started out of 2 shafts worn down. Bad mileage, sort of like a Sherman tank at 3 gal. per mile. Unless the natives had a desire for sawdust.
