Navy Officer's Button?

Found this at one of my hot spots today. Came up on the E-trac as 11-17 and was about 4 inches deep. I don't know much about buttons, but tried to ID it this afternoon. It measures approx 14mm in diameter so I figure it's a Federal Navy Officer's cuff button.(1830's-1850's) Anyone with a bit of knowledge on these who can confirm or deny it?

Happy Hunting!

-Nate

What's the proper way to clean a button like this? I'd like to get the gunk off there, but don't know what to use. Any suggestions?

Very nice Nate, I can not believe that small field is still producing great finds. Kinda hard to leave it when you go out and find a button like that. Hopefully the fields near by will produce some nice relics for us. My little site produced today also.

I am still saying that the button is Marine Corp. I believe that it is 1850's or so. The anchor is curved to the right on the more modern MC buttons. Very nice! You still have the Golden Horseshoe Award!

On every version of US Marines button, the eagle's head is dipping down -- and is BELOW the top of its raised wings. Dirtdigger1581 is correct, it is a US Navy Officer button. It is an Albert-book NA-101 or NA-102 type, dating from the late 1830s to early-1840s.

Thanks for the confirmation. I appreciate the help!
