Today I was out toward Atlantic Beach/Emerald Isle and found 7 .50 cal bullets and a single .30 cal bullet. All were found in an area bout 25 yards long and 7 yards wide and were all about 6-8" down. They have all been fired as you can see rifling marks on them, but are in good condition as they have no impact marks. My question is, WHY. Why would I find that many bullets at that depth in that tight of an area? Has anyone else ever found modern rounds in this area and in this condition? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I would guess (and it's just a guess) that the Navy or Marines did some training in that area at some point around, during, or just after WWII, possibly strafing practice or something along those lines. NC had a pretty substantial military presence during the war, so I'd venture that's where your bullets came from.

I agree.

That's kinda what I was thinking. I know the Army had control of Fort Macon in the 40's and assumed they were around that era even though I found them about 10 miles from there. Any idea on what I can use to clean them up a bit.

I'm far from an expert on cleaning or preservation, but for those items I think either lemon juice or vinegar.

MANY PEOPLE DONT KNOW - WE FIRED AT GERMAN U BOAT OF NC SHORES AS WELL AS OTHER BEACHES IN WW II
THERE ARE BEACHES UP AND DOWN OUR EAST COAST YOU CAN FIND .50 CALS

FOR SUB PRACTICE

Cool finds! Congrats :icon_thumright:

Thanks Mr. B. This was only my second third time out. I'm fairly new to the hobby, I got the detector to get me and the wife out of the house more and do something. I used to love doing this as a kid and figured now I could afford a decent detector and might have more fun doing it... Any way if anyone knows any good spots to go here in eastern nc please let me know.

Thanks.

Wow Casper, I'm one that didn't know that. I knew about the German subs off our coast but that was it. I need to brush up on my nc history.... I'm ashamed of myself....

You've got yourself a good machine! Pretty soon It won't be a hobby, It'll be an obsession :laughing7: Sadly, a lot of really good sites in New Bern have been swallowed up by golf courses and housing subdivisions. I too live in New Bern, and If you have any questions, feel free to PM me.
