i will be in ocean city for 7 or 8 days in sept. on buisness . and i would love to try my luck at salt water hunting . as i have never been at the ocean and had my metal detector at the same time. and this time im bringing it no matter what. i have hunted nothing but fresh water sites for the last 15 years on and off.ive had most of the u/w detectors and like the cz-20 and excal 1k the best , I just bought a new excal 1k and i would greatly appreciate any guidance on the best salt water settings and the worth while spots . and any info on the ocean city area beaches and their respective laws and restrictions. or dangerous areas.or high crime areas. i just want to have some fun and not risk my life or my gear. i certainly appreciate any info you could give me on ocean beach.

this is a great forum , and i see alot of good people helping others. that just shows the kind of people this hobby has to offer , its almost like instant freinds

well thanks again in advance

I have never hunted beaches near Ocean City, so someone else can help you with the laws and rules. However, settings for the Excal go as follows for me. Vol. as high as it will go. Disc. on 1 or 2. Sensitivity not on AUTO, but as high to the counter clockwise before it clicks into auto as you can get it with out to much falsing. Hunt in Disc. mode.

Keep the coil close and level with the ground and you don't need to overlap much at all with the EXCAL. Good luck and let us know how it went.

Heading to Ocean City tomorrow morning until Monday. We are having a family with reunion with cousins I have NOT seen since 1982 and they are ALL older than me ;D

My sis from Colorado flew out last night and has NEVER metal detected. She's excited on trying it out. Tonight we are taking her to Virginia Beach oceanfront so she can get a start LOL....but then we plan to detect at Ocean City. We will be staying at some resort my other sister and cousins set up on 67th Street...can't remember the name....I just want to metal detect and see my cousins.

So, if anyone has any insight on detecting up there (of course, just sand detecting)... I would greatly appreciate it. I will bring my laptop with me and camera incase we find something extraordinary  and see if anyone has any tips.

Thanks and Junkmagnet....hope you have a great time....and find lots of wonderful items...I'll make sure we leave some stuff for you ;D

We have metal detected all the way down Route 1, including in Ocean City - all the way down past Virginia.

There have been very few places we could not detect. There are areas that are marked - "fishing only" or "by permit only" - or No Trespassing - but other than that, we never had a problem.

We have always gone very early in the morning (daybreak), until the beaches started filling up - then left. We have also gone past the public areas - and of course - near the public beaches, where the hotels and motels are, is better for jewelry etc., then further past the public area.

Here is a tip we learned - two blocks from the beach - the motels are less than half the cost, but almost just as nice - so, if you don't mind walking 2 blocks, you'll spend less money, if you are planning on staying for a day or two.

PS - look out for the guys that rake the beach - they come with a tractor and rake-like thing and rake the beach - they will run you over.

You'll also find out, there are regulars out there that come every morning, usually only for an hour or so. Of course, they don't get it all - or even half.

Thank You Mrs. O,

I really appreciate your response. I have not been to Ocean City since 1975!!! I am sure it has changed quite a bit. The resort we are staying at is on Sunset Island Drive at 67th Street. I don't mind walking down to the beach, I need the exercise! LOL. We will be staying at the condo my other younger sister rented (I'm the oldest of the family). I wanted to get a room on the beach...but this is ok too.

I'll post if we are able to find anything awesome, but I may just post cause it will be my sister's first time. I know I can get her hooked! LOL

I was thinking of stopping at Chincoteaque Island as my sister LOVES horses! I don't think she's been there and thought it would be a nice surprise to see the wild horses, as I have NEVER been myself. Of course, no metal detecting there, just to see the horses.

I have to remember though, I can't find ALL the treasures, I have to leave some for JunkMagnet for when he goes in Sept

Thank you again! Have a Blessed Weekend!

I dont know ocean city at all, but for ocean detecting - get wet, at low tide, and youll have higher odds of finding the goods.

ron and ann. Im in oceam city to on 54 st. We should meet up

I Hunted Ocean city 2 years ago.The first thing i did is i went scouting to find the busiest area. I found that to be Close to the amusement park it seemed to have the bigest crowds in the water. I only hunted lowtides in the wet sand. i was there for 3 nights . I did find 2 gold rings and a silver ring. I found the wet sand to be soft. Let your feet help you out, walk the wet sand and hunt the most firmest area you can feel. the rings wont sink as far down and you will get a fighting chance.
Good luck
LT
