many "day hikes" end several days later.
food, water, shelter, dependent on the climate zone you intend to hike into.

Ahhhh, cell phone comes to mind, compass or GPS. rope (even if it's just clothes line) Extra clothes if you have the room. ??? I guess that's about it that i would take.

wow that was fast.lol thanks .this area is big but its in the middle of four roads that would take you about a day to walk to so im not worred about getting lost and i wont be alone and yes i will have my trusty phone with me .hope i can find it would love to md it. thanks for the advice kenny

May I suggest a hiking/walking stick? Always comes in handy moving weeds/brush out of your way, use as a defense weapon if necessary. I'm just lost if I don't have mine with me. ;D

Happy hiking & stay safe.

 RR

I would carry mace/pepper spray or some other way to defend yourself, if need be.
Some other things that come to mind are:
cell phone.
some sort of tent, or other shelter.
extra clothes, hat, gloves.
ziplock bag full of dryer lint - for starting fire if need be.
large/jumbo size cotton balls with vaseline rubbed into them - fire starter
several lighters or a box of wooden matches.
Most importantly, take a buddy with you or at the very least leave a detailed plan at home
of your route and in what area you will be with description of the clothes that you will be
wearing. Don't want to jinx your plans, just in case it is needed, authorities will have it.
Avoid wet and cold - they can be a very dangerous pair.

Hope it helps. Please let us know what you have found and how the hike was.

for protection i have a s/w 44 auto mag for my side and a sawed of dubble barrell 12 gauge on a sling.the walking stick is a great idea well all of them are good ideas and i'll let you know what i find. thanks kenny

One day? Whatever you bring metal detecting. . . and a knife. Not that I don't bring a knife with me metal detecting.
I would bring a pistol if I had one. If there is any chance you will have to stay the night, you will need a lighter and some kind of shelter. Maybe a fire kit or tinder box if it's wet where you're going. You could bring the bare necessities, or you could go all out. Check youtube for day pack or survival videos. You can get by pretty light.
Enjoy yourself,

Leave a map of where you are going with a relative or a neighbor. Just in case.

Good luck and keep us posted!!

All of the above just don't forget extra batteries and something to keep your finds in, of course don't forget your metal detector :tongue3:

I would take (outside of detector, water, snacks, camera and digger,) a roll up Army survival blanket...use as blanket, shelter, rain guard....
Matches, lighters and batteries in zip lock bag, pocket knife, a roll of twine ,dry socks,a pistol and call it good.....

Day Hike:

Cell phone
GPS
Water (Look at camelback, backpacks)
Beef jerkey, power bars
Light med kit
Flashlight w/extra batteries
field knife
metal detector w/extra batterias
probe
small firearm ( I take a Taurus millennium .40)

That is my pack for a day hike of 10 miles or so.

Any place that you have room to hike for a day before hitting a road is big enough to walk in circles in several times over, and unless you are experienced at the tools necessary to walk a straight line, you WILL walk in a circle ! A GPS or at the very least a decent compass is a MUST.

What ! Good are:
1...A! GPS
2...A! Compass
IF!
You haven't purchased and studied a USGS Topographic Map(s) of the area :icon_study:
I NEVER! go into a new AREA w/o doing so!
AND!
I go into such areas for a Full Time & months long Trip(s) :thumbsup

An ROTC kid got lost in our woods last week for a few days after a "Compass Learning Course"

Not sure how the poor kid will ever live that down.

Most of all,COMMON SENSE. :icon_thumright:

An old post but a good one. I hope your trip turned out well. A one day hike, don't bring nothin. Just what you need to detect or a little food or water if you think you will need it. Since you have doubts, bring something to start a fire. You can always start a fire and sit around it and ponder your next move, or just stay there. How did you make out?
