Spent today digging for the first time this New Year with friend Bill. Dug a good amount of early flat buttons and some early lead shot. Managed to unearth this cast heavy brass device. I believe it to be a Rev War British Catridge Box plate. It has four attachment hooks and the star/sun burst is identical to those used by Regiment's of Foot. It is also the exact size of other known more common specimens. Any thoughts our friends across the pond or those more familiar with Rev War items would be appreciated. This came from a site with known Rev War activity.

Thanks

Dan

Can't help with the ID but that's some cool finds!!!

Wow! I hope you're right about that. The attachments look correct.

:o

I have found one near identical in farm land that saw no military activity (doesn't discount military finds), but it was close to a remote rural villiage & I didn't even get a pewter button. My opinion is, they went on leather (Obvious I know) & are an 18th-early 19th Century Horse Harness Furniture. The hooks are identical to all the other various types. :read2: I could probably find a similar one on the UKDFD but the server is down.

Thanks for the update - I sort of had that in the back of my mind as well - though never seen one with four hooks. All the ones I have recovered over here have usually had two hooks or to harness bars. It is a cool find either way - let me know if you get a picture of one similar - would love to see it.

Thanks

Dan

I was just waiting for the camera to charge  (I've only had 1 in 20+ years, & seeing as these were made here & maybe only a few made it to the US, it must be a Rare find)

The UKDFD Database is still down, so can't search for similar right now.

Thanks again - I would say that is it. Let me know if you see anything in the UKDFD database. Thanks for the help.

Forgot to say - 'Welcome' to the best site on the web :hello:

I will have a look, but an exact match will be a long shot, I was more looking to show a date range for the hook arrangements on the reverse. ie. some very similar ones used as 'horse harness mounts'.

Hey Dan!
Here is one that Mark just dug on a site that we are hunting that had Rev War activity also.
I dont have a pic of the back, but I think it is just like yours. I hope you and your family are doing well!
Welcome to TNET--

I believe they are Rev War Period but not a standard Military piece, just a Horse decoration that may have been on a Military horse as well as a Civilian, including the heavy horses that ploughed the land in the Rev War period.

Keith,
thanks bud - good to see you again.

Crusader,
thanks for the help - I actually posted on and off here but lost my name and pasword. My buddy Beau turned me on to this site (Aquachigger) been nothing but helpful.

Thanks

The UKDFD is still down :( Before I forget, keep this in your favs & search for 'horse harness mount' plus a few other similar searches, you will get a general idea

Nice find Dan. I hope you guys get into some more good sites. Bill told me about that piece and I was hoping it turned out to be Rev War.
