Need help identifying coin - NEW PICS/INFO

Hi all - I've had this coin for about 20 years and would like some help finding out what it is. The only thing I know about it is that it is real silver. Any information would be greatly appreciated :)

Please see attached new pictures we used kitchen scales to weigh the coin which came out 11g, hope this helps you coin experts on figuring out if this is authentic or not and what it is.

It's a Spanish cob, or that is the intention. Sometimes condition and pictures can be deceiving, but my initial reaction is it's a replica that was exposed to salt water for a while, but I'm not super confident in saying that... and most times for these I am. Even though it's pitted parts of the coin strike me as being cast, but I'll have to stick to the answer of not sure enough to say. Where you found it would probably sway my guess.

The story behind how I got it.... I was married to my first husband and his Aunt and Uncle had started to develop Daufuskie Island in SC, my recollection is a bit cloudy but I believe they met someone that was large scale contractor that peaked my Ex-uncle's interest in Treasure Hunting, I believe that he hired an treasure hunter to do an exploration of the area around Daufuskie Island (can't recall if they found anything) but I'm rambling now...anyway, I was with my first husband from 1991 - 1998 and during the early part of the relationship we were given this coin from them. That's about all I can remember.....

I Agree with Iron Patch, thinking its cast but not positive

Brady, do you know the best way to go about finding out for certain? Is there a reputable place to send it to find out if it's a cast or real?

One thing to try is to determination the denomination by the diameter... half real, 1 real, 2 reales, 4 reales, or 8 reales. Then weigh it and see if it makes sense. You can't prove it's genuine doing that, but if extremely light weight it would suggest it's a copy.

We are going to go out and get a scale today to weigh it. I think we'll try to snap some pics too to show the thickness and other measurements. (Hubby is a photographer)

Cob coins have no set dimension of diameter to determine denomination--based on their method of minting. Best way (outside of seeing the denomination on the coin itself) is by weight, using 27 grams as the guide for 8R coins, with lesser denominations proportionately for lower weight.

Thank you Don... I was trying to figure out how to measure diameter (due to wear). Hopefully weight will help.

Well I don't know about anyone else, but I can look at a cob and tell what denomination by the over all diameter. If you put it beside a quarter it would likely be easy enough to tell.

NYNewbie, on a side note I visited that island in 1980 before there was ever any development with a friend of my dad who grew up in the area. Very dear childhood memories of a very beautiful place before condos and golf courses.
I know nothing about Spanish Cobs other than I would love to find one! Hope it is real or whatever!

Fletch88, That area was gorgeous and I hated the idea of it being built up and destroying (IMO) the land and the lives of the people that lived there as well. The island was a true treasure!

The only transportation was a 69 VW BUG with a luggage rack fabricated on top. We rode the whole island on top of that contraption and it was so beautiful.
The only house on the whole island was a 2 story wood framed house that I remember was "rocking" in the middle of the night. Turns out it was cows rubbing up against the walls outside while we were sleeping!

I only wish I had more photographs of the whole excursion. I saw the island a few years ago from the mainland and my heart sank! Condos and golf courses do not do justice to the true beauty that the island once held.

I can't authenticate your coin, but I can provide first hand knowledge of Spanish Reales being found in the Daufuskie Island area, I lived within 10 miles of Daufuskie Island and have lived here for the last 41 years, there have been a number of Spanish Reales found on the area beaches after passing coastal storms, the coins were either uncovered or washed in from the numerous historic Spanish shipwrecks in this area.

I witnessed one being found on a Hilton Head Island beach about 3 years ago after a hurricane went up the coast.
