My first thought is lead slag. Scratch it and see if it is.
 

That was my first thought too, but if it is lead, where he found it is odd. I'll scratch it. Thanks.

Noticed this was your very first post - so, Welcome Aboard Hunter! Take a look at Sub-Forums: Georgia for information (i.e., clubs, etc.) directly related to your state.
 

Can you or your son tell us anything more? Like, where found, was there any signs of charcoal or ash, like from a fire? Where found - above ground, dug up, how deep? Can you add a quarter for size reference? Does the piece seem heavy for its size?

Lead is a good possibility. Another possibility might also be aluminum, although aluminum isn't nearly as heavy as lead.
