Welcome from White Plains, New York! Your question is a common one that is a bit difficult to answer. Much depends on your budget, as a "low cost" Multi-frequency VLF metal detector that will work well in a saltwater environment and in dry sand and dirt, starts around $1,100.00. If you forget about the wet saltwater sand and just stay in dry sand and the woods, you can get started for $200.00with a single-frequency Very Low Frequency detector. Do your due dilligence!

Thanks for responding--I think at this point I will forget the wet sand, so is there any particular brand you recommend? I know places like Big 5 have them but I dont want to waste money..Thanks

I read someones post regarding the ace...also wondered about Bounty Hunter...

The Ace 250 and 350 are great starter units. If you can afford it, the Garrett AtPro is waterproof, works great on the beach, and has ground balance capabilities to adjust for minerals in the soil. It's a good relic machine, jewelry machine and coinshooter for under $600.

You can use it on dry sand and wet sand. If wont go as deep on a mineralized beach (salt). If you get chatter from the salt, you can turn the sensitivity down.

Call if I can help you with your purchase.

I have 2 ACE 350 for sale, 1 has 10 of use and the other less than and hour. Bought one for wife and myself. She did use hers and I upgraded to an AT PRO. Let me know if your interested I can make you a sweat deal for Christmas. Both has cases and a few extras. Thanks

Hello and welcome to the forum!

Congrats on your MD decision :)...

I would go with Tesoro metal detectors, made in the USA and have a Lifetime warranty

welcome to the hunt! two of my friends and I use AT Pros, both on the beach and dry land. It is a very user friendly machine and easy to learn. We have easily paid for them this year with finds.
