Here's the ring and specs:

Purchased in Israel (I don't think that is relevant).

Size 7. TOTAL CARAT WEIGHT: 1.08 carats

Setting: 14kt. White Gold Mounting
Weight: 6.90 Grams
Center Stone: Round Brilliant Cut, .58 carat, color grade H, Clarity grade SI2
Side Stones: 36 Round Brilliant Cut Diamonds, .50 carat, color grade G/H, Clarity Grade: SI

I am looking at this as a buy/sell opportunity. If I bought this, what do you think I would be able to get off of a jeweler? One jeweler said $300 over the phone... ???

Online I used some diamond calculators.. Here is what I came up with..

.58 stone in the center ~$1,200
All the other small stones ~$360 ($10/piece)
1 ct diamond=.2 grams so subtract say .23 from the total ring to come up with 6.67 grams of 14k gold which = ~$216 @ $1746/oz

TOTAL with all calculations= $1,776

What is realistic?

Have you seen this ring in person? I would never buy something like that without looking at it real close. It's hard to tell in a photo but that diamond looks cloudy

No.. But I could drive about 10 min away to go see it. The specs I have are directly off the certification sheet I guess..

I work as a jeweler for one of the nation's largest jewelery retailers. Here's my opinion based on your stats and pictures. Bear in mind that this is only my PERSONAL opinion....

I see rings similar to the ones in your pictures almost daily. They have stones of equal size and clarity as the ones in your pictures.... They usually carry a retail price tag of 600 to 800 dollars. Also bear in mind that jewelery retailers have a very high mark-up. Their cost from the manufacturer is usually 30 to 40 percent of what they have it priced for retail sale in their shop. (probably why a jeweler told you 300 bucks) In my opinion, jewelery is a very poor investment if you are paying anywhere near full retail price.

For accurate grading of that stone, certification by a reputable firm would be a 'must' for me. If the description you show was based on a Certification, I'd ask to receive a copy first, then do an online check of that company's reputation. If the description of the stone was only that of the seller, I'd disregard it and demand--at the seller's expense--a reputable Certification before making any decisions.

I have a good bit of jewelry experience in the past. DO NOT go by any appraisal value for it can be exaggerated ! If appraised by a pro , you can use the color, cut, clarity, carat size as a selling point .
That ring , used, in our old store, would bring anywhere from $300 - $500 . Nice solitaires are easier to sell than that .

The jewelry members here are giving you good advice.......Any ring you buy at a store then take home is like a car, it depreciates rapidly, only the gold in it retains it's true value... $2000 ring out the door might be worth $500-$750 6 months down the road if you try to sell it, and only then that would be to someone who doesn't know the true value of used jewelry.....

Buy it for your wife if you like it, but I would not buy it as a money investment, investment in your marriage, good buy, investment for the future, bad buy......

Many people will tell you that diamonds are a great investment. Overall, not true. VERY, VERY nice , loose diamonds may be if bought at a good price. You can buy a 1/4 ct loose stone for $100 ,, but you can also pay $3000 for a super nice stone. Buyer beware !

The jewelers and pawn shop owners in my area say they are inundated with small diamonds (less the 1 karat) due to the recession and the public's need for cash. If they buy at all, they pay a 'steal' of a price. That said, high quality stones of 1 karat or more are still in a more balanced supply-demand environment, but still a buyer's market.

You are all very wise on here. Thank you for all of your input.

The lady still has the ring - she is trying to sell for more than I will give her, and if not she is going to come back to me and take what she can get. The lowest I got her down to was $500, but I would feel more comfortable buying at $400 - either giving to my wife or trying to make maybe $100 off of it.

I recently turned in a few good gold rings for gold coin, locally. I do this on a regular basis. My RV and a recent off-road bike were bought with the gold coins. Preferred to cash today. The FUN of meteldetecting! My dealer said, of the diamonds in the rings, they're only worth "a dime a dozen" today". Buyer beware! But you must decide what they are worth to YOU! TTC
