Hello,

I found this coin this weekend, and was hoping someone with a better eye for these coins can give me an idea of what type it may be.

The only cleaning I have done has been soap and water when I first found it, followed by a 15 minute peroxide bath.

The only detail I can see is "ONE CENT" barely legible, and the faint outline of the wreath. This coin measures exactly 28 mm in diameter, and it appears that there is very little wear on the edge. This leads me to believe it is 1837 or older, since red book says after that LCs were 27.5 mm.

While this coin is clearly plow struck, it does appear to be in decent shape under the crud. I have not been successful with cleaning these old beauties, and do not want to go further until I know more about the coin.

I greatly appreciate any information you can give me about this coin. Thank you in advance for taking the time to help me with this.
Anthony

Yep, Looks like a large cent alright! This coin was the governments attempt to give the pubic one penny's worth of copper. well, these coins didn't go over too well. The American people used them for buttons and curtain weights. Of course they were spent too! It is worth at least Eleven dollars today. That is the minimum value of a coin in what dealers call"good" condition. You are fortunate to own one, as those who collect them are passionate about them. 1793-1857. Draped bust variety 1796-1807 Classic head 1808-1814 Coronet variety 1816-1839 Braided hair Variety 1839-1857. Find yourself a 1793 liberty in "good' condition and you will bank about 37,000 dollars! cheers

Let it soak in some olive oil for a few days. I use a wooden toothpick to try and get rid of some of the crud after a day or so, put it back, use toothpick, put it back. . . .

That's about as gentle as you can be.
