Found this at a turn of the 19th century bottle dump. I don't really have an idea as to what it could be. But it does look like somebody carved their initials or something into it. I'm thinking it might be a cable or rope tensioner. Does anybody have an idea of what it could be? The tab on the side really throws me off. The engraving looks like it says 1R. Whatever it is, it's cool because it's been personalized. Thanks for any help!

I have the exact same thing. Found it with a bunch of old pot belly stove parts. Just assumed it was part of it

I found a complete lid to a pot belly stove up the hill from the bottle dump. Could be a piece of the stove. But why would there be an engraving? So many questions.

Maybe a part # our reference for assembly. Just a thought.

That makes sense. But wouldn't something like that be stamped rather than carved? This looks like it was done by hand. Just thinking out loud here.

Just looked at mine, it has no marking so you may be right. I'm not sure that is what it is but makes sense if you found stove parts close by also. Maybe someone can enlighten us.

My buddy says I always find the weird stuff. Glad I'm not alone. Lol

I like finding weird stuff. The research is part of the fun! Last summer I found an entire front axle to a Model T Ford. It took me forever to figure out what it was, but after I put it up here, we concluded that it was a front axle to a Model T. It was fun trying to put together the pieces of the puzzle.

I agree. It's a big part. Maybe this thread should be moved to what is it. Maybe we can get positive ID

Should I just re-post it to the "What is it?" section?

I think if you report to a mod they will move it.

Wish I could help with more than an opinion. I do not see how this would be used on an old cast iron stove, but it's cool that they were found on both coasts. PNW = Pacific North West? & VA.

Yeah, opposite sides of the country. Nice job on the PNW. Washington State, to be exact.

Could be for the door on the wood stove the elongated hole was for the bolt and the round hole was for the door to swing on like a hinge. The elongated was so you could adjust in or out for good fit.The hood hinges on my old Chevy pick-up have elongated holes so you can adjust. Don't know for sure though.
