My middle daughter sent me images of this watch fob wax seal she recently purchased. She said it has a steam engine impression on it. To me it looks like more of a steam powered carriage with what looks like two men operating it. She said the red color seal looks to be made of glass. I told her its possibly a carved stone. The image looks similar to a contraption from the 19th century known as the Roper Steam Buggy. I told her to bring it over sometime, so I could have a closer look at it. My question is why would a person choose such an image for a wax seal.

Maybe it was from the steam engine company that was marketing them. It was an industrial revolution for all.

Maybe from a Roper Steam Buggy operator or the owner of the company. Very unique!

That's kinda what I'm thinking. Maybe a statement piece on a young 19th century man of the times implying he's all about the then modern technology of the Victorian machine age. It was interesting reading a little about Roper. The guy died of a heart attack ripping along at a breakneck speed of 40mpr on his steam power motorcycle.

I think you nailed it. Steam cars predate all other self propelled vehicles, so your object must date from the 1870's or earlier.
