need help

i live by a bunch of 1840 houses and towns.
i searched for hours today at some houses for sale and found only new coins. how should i set my whits mxt for old coins. im new please help. thanks

to my understanding of how it works is that the MDs now are dsigned with special circuitry that can recognize round objects when they are just that. round objects. flattened aluminum cans can appear to be a dime to a dollar reading and never consistent.

i dont know that there are any settings available on any detector to distingush between old and new. depth is a great indicator. most of our coins all range in the same size. just keep digging for the good stuff!!

if these houses andsuch are near newer roads, this could be the reason for all the new clad. or new sidewalks theough old areas could explain this.....

the closer you get to those dwelling the better the odds of older coins, i say. just dig, my friend.

If the sidewalks are old, then look at the heighth of the soil next to them. If the yard is a lot taller than the sidewalk, it indicates that either it's been filled in or there is lots of soil buildup over the years. It doesn't cause loss of depth, it just means that the older coins are possibly deeper than you can detect. IMO
