Need ID for a friend

A friend of mine found this at an old home site in S. E. North Carolina a couple of years ago where many colonial and civil war relics were found. It appears to be stamped brass and well made. There are no makers marks or wording on it. We would like to know if it could be Military and age. Thanks for any help you can give us.

My first thought is it's some kind of "Mothers" pin to denote her son is in the military. I highly doubt it's a military issue item. That type of hat was worn in the 1890's and the Spanish American War.

I think it was also worn by early seafarers.

Thank you One Mans Trash for the ID. While the front of the one on eBay looks like an exact match the back has some significant differences. Notably the rope doesn’t show through to the back and a different pin and attachment for the eagle. While I think your ID as a sweetheart pin is correct I think the one my friend found maybe slightly older. Again thank you for the ID as several hours of searches by myself had gotten me nowhere. Also thanks 72cheyenne for the nice comments. Guess we can mark this one solved.
