I found this button at an old park and was wondering if it is anything special. I don't know anything about buttons but this one looks to be the oldest I've found. It was found in Ft. Worth, Texas. It's probably about 3/4 the size of a dime, has a bird on it with about 13 or 14 stars all around it. Any info would be great, thanks.

I don't know either but it screams early 1800's to me.
Like I said, what do I know? ???

Too bad you weren't right! Thanks anyway.

Yep it's a 1900's civilian button made to look like a navy. I'm thinking it's not actually metal though but a metalized plastic. That's a hard plastic with a thin copper coating. Seems like that was popular in the mind 1900's. A metalized plastic button will give a good reading on a detector. Lots of times the coting will be separating from the plastic.

Im late to post but I agree with the others. It may be an old design but its a civilian button with a Navy motiff. I found a similar button in my back yard built in the late 1950's. . They are always on eBay. Green check? If you need proof I can research and post some links later but I think its sufficiently solved . :)

No, I'll take your word for it. Everyone seems to think the same thing. Why are they on ebay though?

People think they are military buttons and try to sell them. Search under "antique or military or Navy buttons" and you will find them. The design is very common and they can be found in mixed lots often with military buttons. Heres an example on eBay now top row mixed with Swedish buttons. . http://cgi.ebay.com/ANTIQUE-VINTAGE...tem&pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item230785a90c

I wouldnt blame you if you needed proof. Im not sure I can find it right now but they have been posted here before. These buttons are still made and sold today. There are slight variations due to the many different manufacturers but they are all civilian fashion buttons. One clue you will notice on eBay is that nobody ever buys them.
