Hello. New to the board. Located in Ophir, NC right in the middle of the Uwharries. Found this point yesterday less than a foot from the stone. Wondering if this is a Savannah River point and if you think the stone is actually a spall from which the point was made. Also, I am not familiar with this type of stone. There's a lot of rhyolite in this area and lots of clear and milky quartz but I've never run across any of this color....

Appreciate the assist,

DreamcatcherNC

First of all, NICE POINT.
Secondly, welcome to TreasureNets Native American section.

I live about an hour or so from the Uwharrie and I have some Rhyolite I found way out here.
I am still new to this but there are folks here who will amaze you with what they know.

Again, supercool point!

Not to spam your thread...but here is the only Savannah River I have.
Pitiful and worn that it is...

Hi Dreamcatcher, I'm in NC too. You have a Late Savanah River, Late Archaic 2000BC-1000BC.
Unsure about the material though, I'll not hazzard a guess.
The other peice looks like a spall, it's definetly not a Knife/blade.

My advice is to study the material, look for flakes/chips of this material, when hunting where you found it, if you find lots of flakes/chips you are in a good location to find other points. Morrow Mts,Guilfords,Stanlys are all Late Archaic, If your site is of that, you should come accross these types.

When I first started hunting, I found nothing for 4 months (hunting everyday) it was hopeless, so I studied the materials from around here.
That helped tremendously, within no time I found my first Kirk, serrated, notched, green Rholite, with gold fleck, I looked at that point morning, noon & night,( the mind is more subseptable to learning early morning/late night) to familuarize myself with the shape, material, colour. Within a few days I was finding more. I have 250 points/blades now. :)

I hope this helps all new collectors.

Molly. :)

Sorry, where are my manners. Welcome Dreamcatcher.

Molly. :)

Welcome to the forum and Wow! :D That is a killer point. I hope that you find many more and share them with us.

Thanks for the welcome, folks....and thanks for the information. I'm looking forward to participating in this forum and will post a few pics of some of the local stuff I find. I've perused the forum for a day or so and some of you have some really good finds. Just as an aside, I've been working primitive pottery the old way for several years, i.e.; clay from the creek, hand formed, fired in a hole in the ground, etc and doing a little brain-tan buckskin periodically (lotsa work). Here's a little of that stuff....and thanks again. Larry

Very nice Larry, you have a talent for sure. Thankyou sharing with us.

Molly.

You're absolutely right, JReb. Both incised designs were copied from Caddo pots. The other is what is referred to in pottery found at Town Creek as "complicated stamped" where the design is carved into a wooden paddle and used to form and shape the clay. Larry

Great looking work Larry, that relic is way cool also, that material looks like it might have been "heat treated" :icon_study:
