Gary, do yourself a favor and never go alone when metal detecting if it's possible, especially beaches. I live in Florida, so I would be no help to you, but I have hunted Florida beaches for the 25 years as well as inland hunting and to me hunting beaches seems to be the touchy area for some people. I'd say for the first 15-20 years, I never had a problem. But here fairly recently, it seems to touch a nerve with some folks on the beach. I have had 3 close call incidents where I thought I was going to have to clobber someone with my beach scoop, which is why I carry my beach scoop slung over my shoulder versus dragging it behind me as some hunters do. It's cocked and loaded ready to swing if need be and at least three times that need was there, but each time I was able to talk my way out of having to clobber someone.

I hunt with my wife and for some reason, they choose me to try and pick a fight with claiming I'm stealing from them or I should be ashamed for finding peoples lost items and keeping it. My wife has turned around and headed back toward the commotion, but I would tell her to keep going and not look back. Fortunately for me it has all turned out without escalation, but if I would have bristled up like someone else may have done, it may not have turned out well.

Gary,
Apparently, Fla. is in a different world. Hunt in SoCal preferably north of SAN and you should have no problems. I've lived in the SAN area since the '80s without ever having a problem.
Don in SoCal

No, we just have cranky entitled people that come here thinking they own the place.

Does being threatened with being sfabbed during the middle of the day by a homeless druggie count?
Always pay attention to your suroundings
