Need suggestions for where to detect for trip from Phoenix to Denver

I may take a drive to Phoenix in January and was looking for ideas for a little detecting on the return trip to Colorado via New Mexico. Ghost towns, gold sites, and meteorite sites are the things that come to mind. Any ideas for areas open to the public?
