It just wasn't glazed during the firing so the maker's imprint could be seen.

I ask if the OP highlighted the white lettering prior to posting? Or was this "as found"?

a lot of times those are signatures and about as easy to read for a Chinese person as it is for us to read someone else's signature on..well...anything actually....
