A miner named Joseph Thomas had a cabin on Frank Trophie's place, later known as Andy Roger's place near the town of Rough and Ready. Thomas got very sick and had sent for Mrs. Trophie to tell her where his gold was buried. He had accumulated about 1500.00 in gold nuggets and dust. Mrs. Trophie had to travel some distance, and when she arrived Joseph Thomas had died without revealing the location of the gold. The gold is rumored to be buried 100 feet from and Oak tree near his cabin in an orchard. 1/3 of an acre was mined off and years later an 1850 $20 gold piece was found on the property. This is the only clue to it's hiding place. "forked oak tree on north hand of creek in line with big pine and thirty yards from oak to B-- and 60 yards from B---."
