It's the great pumpkin state: Illinois is No. 1 in nation
Metro-east farms generally have strong crops this year

All over the country, people will be using Illinois pumpkins this fall -- Illinois has become the nation's No. 1 pumpkin-producing state.
"More than likely, if you are carving a pumpkin this Halloween or making grandma's famous pumpkin pie, your pumpkin came from right here in Illinois," Agriculture Director Tom Jennings boasted in a news release.
"We try to raise about 20 different varieties of pumpkins, everything from real small ones to the big guys," he said. "We have a lot of blue pumpkins and tan pumpkins, and we do raise other colors. It provides more interest to see a difference in pumpkins," Range said.
Illinois has also become the No. 1 pumpkin processor. Of the 13,679 acres of pumpkins in the state, 9,749 are harvested for pumpkin processing, which will assist in the high demand for canned pumpkins during this fall season.
