Didn't even know what it was til I got it home. How does this happen? To me, this is worse than kittens dying. I'd gladly cherish a worn coin... But this? Please tell me there's some magic solution or cleaning method to fix this besides finding another one. I was told the area I found this was bulldozed to remove dirt so I reckon it brought it closer to the top.

To clean so far, I ran under warm water and dabbed with a makeup brush. The year is 1877 as far as I can tell.

I probably sound like a brat finding a seated and complaining but I know you all will understand

As soon as I spit in aluminum foil and wrapped it up a violent reaction took place. The sulphur filled the kitchen the coin was hot and I could feel it bubbling inside. I took off the foil at this point because it seemed so intense.

Just leave in until a tad hot, not till the reaction is so intense. Might want to get a patent on the spit.:laughing7:

Do you know how much money that was during the Reconstruction era?

Got me to thinking about it. Had to Google it out of pure curiosity. I am finding the answer to be around the tune of $5.25.

It looks like your coin was in a fire the way the edges are rounded over and there is so little detail to be seen. Anyway, its a great find that many will never have the experience of digging.
I agree and probably why the lemon juice hasn't touched it, but some times it takes a bit longer, the one I posted above took a week and that was taking out several times and using the tooth paste on it.

At this point probably some silver polish would do the best. Of course it's the trade off of dirty and unclear or clear but very shiny and unnatural. I'm not one to generally poilsh silver but it may be the lesser of two evils.
