Hello duane. What did that set you back ? I just dug 4 of them. Rev war with history on them.

Just about 200 will send more pics as soon as I figure out to down load from phone.

I recently found a solid shot that I believed to be a 6 pound solid shot. It was 3.5" across and weighed 5.76 pounds. The U.S. Artillery table said it should be 3.58" across and weigh 6.1 pounds. I am waiting for a response from Cannonball Guy who is the expert on all things artillery. I would PM him if I were you.

Mine is 3.58 across I my weight is off a little but I have been told they can very a little. I did have a spot were it measured 3.57 I am sure no matter what they were as percise as possible some manufacturers more than the others. That cannon ball guy is one of the best on info on these matters.

I think it also depends on how the deterioration is from being buried. In my research I have seen alot of confederate cannon balls that were some what crude.

The one I have pictured is in really good shape the rest of my collection not so mutch.

This is my whole collection so far.

I agree with everything you said. CBguy is the best, and I think deterioration plays a part without a doubt. Yours is DEAD ON for diameter! As for your CSA question, I know that Stonewall Jackson had some 6 pound guns, but I'd guess the Union had some as well since they were basically obsolete fort-breachers by the CW (Solid ones). Most likely CSA I'd guess. I am hoping mine is the real deal with the weight loss attributed to being 150 years in a black-muck swamp. Something about that kind of ground "leaches" iron really bad sometimes. I wasn't suggesting yours wasn't the real deal. Just tossing my similar ball out there for consideration and noting CB Guy. If you want to see mine, (before and after cleaning) it's under my "Latest Started Threads" line under "ParsonWalker". Welcome to Tnet, and you have a very fine start to a collection!

Thank you I am glad to be here,oh I know you weren't suggesting mine wasn't real I wondered my self because of the condition its really good and the seam threw me.

Again, comparing what I have to yours, in the pic, is the "seam" running top to bottom? Ground down flat and barely visible?

Well the seam is some what flat about half way around then a real thin seam but not protruding I could not see any grinding marks almost like it was hammered down or wore down I was told some manufacturers would tumble several of them together to smooth any protrusions.

I have been told its Confederate thats the main reason I bought it thats pretty well all my stuff. I have started metal detecting last year found a couple of canister shot and mini balls.

Very nice Purchase .
&
Some nice other Relics on the Mantle as well .

What state are you in ? If you Don't Mind.

This is a better shot of seam.
