New CRH'er introduction and seeking advice

Hi guys, first post. I'm committed now.... no turning back lol.

Anyways, my name is Michael and I have been watching tons of crh videos lately on YouTube and doing a lot of reading here and elsewhere on techniques and advice. I've decided this is the place I will make my home and settle in for the journey. I am located in Northeast louisiana and want to begin doing some crhing. I plan on doing most of my crhing in halves and dimes (yes, I have the silver bug) with the occasional nickel rolls (for war nickels and buffalo's to keep moral up during my skunks). I mostly want to model my methods after a user here, TheMastermind. Because let's face it.... those results are downright awe inspiring. :notworthy:

Now that the introduction is out of the way, I should mention my current concerns with the method considering my current work situation. I currently work out of state in south texas in the oilfield, however, I am on no set schedule for when I will be home and when I will be away. So, as you can see, this causes some logistical issues. I have a very good relationship with the banks in my area back home since I used to run casinos and did massive amounts of business with them, so I have no doubt I can arrange the coin orders and coin dumps. However, the scheduling will be of some concern. I want to do as much as possible while home since I will be on total downtime for a few days to a week at a time. However, I never know how long it will be and I just don't know what the best strategy for this would be with the orders.

While at work on the other hand I still plan on doing some crhing just not on as grandiose of a scale since it will be incredibly hard for me to get halves since we are always moving towns. However I should still be able to do dimes and nickels that I pick up at random banks. In fact, that is what I have already started doing $100 at a time. I am currently at work and just decided to start this at the beginning of the week so I do not have a large bankroll established for this purpose yet, however that will be fixed next pay check. I plan to dedicate $1000 at first strictlyly for crhing this next pay check and bump it up over the next month or so as needed.

Anyway, while at work over the past week with $100 mini bank roll, I have already done somewhere in the neiborhood of $300 in nickels and gotten 2 war nickels and about $200 in dimes and got 2 silver rosies. I also tried several hundred in quarters, but later decoder what a waste of time that can be.

So, if you guys wouldn't mind, any advice on scheduling my orders or tips tricks would be greatly appreciated.

Something I think I should ask before I go through to many halves, are there any other halves worth keeping other than the silvers?

There are no wrong answers here. Keep what you like. Its supposed to be fun - so make it fun! Some folks like to build complete sets. There are some clad coins that some people look for and keep: Commemoratives, NIFC coins (including proofs), "No FG" (I believe '82P is the most common), doubled dies ('74D is the most common), magician's coins, foreign coins etc.

I've never been a "set builder" but I used to keep all of the others I mentioned when I first started. They were about the only "keepers" I could find. However, I had soon accumulated over $1000 worth of non-proof NIFC halves. They're just a lot more common than you'd think they'd be. I couldn't find a market for them, so rather than tie up a bunch of money I could be using more wisely, I cut my collection down to 2-3 of each date/mintmark that were in the best shape. I still keep proofs if they're in good shape, but I only have ~60 of those. Thats actually more than I want, but I lack the ability to toss them back unless they're beat up. I keep all the others when I find them, but I don't specifically look for them. When I search halves, they get the rim check where I pull out anything that I want a better look at. The rest then get the sound test before going into the dump bag. In any of that, if I happen by chance to see one of the "no FG" or potential doubled die dates, I'll check for it, but I do not date check every coin. You can usually tell proofs and commemoratives from the rim check (if you can't they're likely in such bad shape you wouldn't want them anyway). You'll find magician's coins as well as any missed silver during the sound test.

Well, I got my first bank willing to order me boxes today. It's low volume at first, one box every two weeks, but it's a start. Also, I think I have another bank or two that will do it as well, so I should be able to get a box a week. Like I said, it's a small beginning. However, I believe I'll be able to up the volume with a little time when they see I'm reliable. Also, the situation with me being gone a lot kind of worked itself out. My girlfriend and stepson have taken to the hobby, so they will be picking up boxes while I am at work. All in all, things are going better than I had planned. With that being said, the banks I had planned on getting cwr from today don't have any, so it looks like we will be doing dimes today.

Skunked on the dimes today. Gonna get us some more halfs tomorrow. Maybe we will have better luck then, wish us luck.

Skunked on a half box of halfs today. Got our first full box coming tomorrow. Hoping for better luck then. Might pick us up some other coinage to just to give us a bunch to do over the weekend.

Welcome to the hobby. I've been at it for a few years (on and off). Happy hunting.

So I got to the bank where she told me she would have me a box of halves today, and there was $400 dollars in mwr that had been opened and rerolled. However, in the banks defence, they didn't specifically say they were coming on order, they simply said they would have a box today. Well, obviously my concern was that I was picking up someone's dumps, but just to make sure, I bought it anyways. And just to insure I got SOMETHING I bought a box of dimes to. Got home, me and the stepson did the halfs, and sure enough, skunk. Makes me wonder why he kept the other $100 of the box though... Anyways, on a lighter note, we did atleast score 2 silver rosies in the dime box. Guess I'll have to make that bank a dump bank as well. Sucks to because that was one of the most cooperative banks I have been to :(

Dont give up from one experience.

Try a few more boxes and see what happens.

Thr bank might have sold $100.00 worth to someone else before you got there.

*foofighters* I'm not giving up on the hobby, I'm a little harder to deter than that :) My 10 year old on the other hand.... well, let's just be glad we found the rosies lol. The bank on the other hand apparently after talking to them yesterday doesn't order them, they just get some from a couple customers from time to time. So I might check in to them some other time down the road, but for now they are definitely off the top of my pick up list.

*norcalsteve* That's true I suppose, it just had pictures in my head of $100 worth of keepers I missed out on. Lol. Probably not the case, but still thought it.

Returned it all this morning and grabbed all the dimes my teller could give me ($150). And got skunked on that this morning, so I guess we will try it again minday.

Why? If they are cooperating definitely keep ordering. Eventually you will get through the dumps they have on hand and get the sealed boxes from the couriers. Be specific about ordering sealed boxes.

If the bank is someone else's dump bank but they only will give you that persons dumps and not order then you will have to move on.

That's the case unfortunately, after picking them up they told me they don't order them, they just get some from time to time. So, dump bank....

You've got to have dump banks. The more the better, as you will likely lose some over time. Plus, you're less likely to lose them (or at least lose them less quickly) by scattering out your dumps and not being a weekly burden on any one bank.

With that said, using a bank as a dump bank eliminates a pickup bank. All banks get halves "from time to time." If they aren't getting them regularly, they may not be another CRH's dump bank. My biggest fear was always that "grandpa's collection" would get dumped onto my dump bank.

Picked up a box of halves today on my way to south texas and went through them. 2 40%ers. And the best part is I was able to dump them in a random wf bank on my way here even though i don't have a wf account. Speaking of which, does anyone know of a wf account that won't kill u with fees because of inactivity?

Yes, buy a house and tie your checking account to your mortgage. That is what I did to get a free checking account with WF.

I pay my mortgage every month with boxes of half dollars. I have one teller who loves to tell customers that there is someone who does this. He gets a kick out of it every month.

Lol, regardless of how awesome that sounds.... my home is paid for... this is the first situation I have ever been in that has made me regret that. Lol
