It looks to be 18th to early 19th century which fits the area it was found.

Here is an example of a British military Revolutionary War period pole axe

In my part of the country a pole axe has a hammer opposite the blade and can be used to pound nails.

You can call a roofing tool whatever you want but it will never be a pole axe.

I don't know you're part of the country but you could just search the term pole axe on the Internet and get the correct description.
Here's mine all cleaned up

Actually Gator, a pole axe is a long handled weapon, usually with a spike on the front and blade on the back, and often with a spear head on top. You can probably find an internet site that calls your type of axe a a pole axe, but there are many more that show what I describe. Now a poll axe is usually like what rbanders is referring to, an axe with a hammer on the front end, and yes, all roofing hatchets are poll axes or hatchets. Look it up, and you'll see poll tomahawks and hatchets. Poll in this case is pronounced the same as pole. The poll is the front part of any single bit axe or hatchet, yours is an early axe with a plain poll, but most with a hammer or spike on the poll are called poll axes. Antique axe guys call any axe/hatchet with a hammer a poll axe/hatchet, ditto for those with spikes like ginseng hatchets or scalping axes. Sometimes they are referred to as polled axes/hatchets.

Actually Gunsil,(sorry ,just could not resist) a poll is the back ,or rear of axe head. The part used to pound/hammer/crush coffee beans or whatever with. A pole axe is,was an enhanced tool with multi use head, often axe, hammer, spike combined on a long shaft, for fighting/battle or some type, guessing hammer polled, used for killing stock at butchering time.
Gator I,m leaning toward tomahawk.

Thanks.
There was extensive Native American occupation of the area followed by a short early U.S. military occupation.

That thing looks older than 18th century but maybe yalls soil is just more harsh and weathered a lot more than usual

It's definitely a very tough environment for metal here.

Just thought I would post a couple items from the area
Black glass Arrowhead

You're quite right, I sometimes get confused about front and back, up and down, etc.!!
