Yes that's pottery and yes those pieces of chert are all artifacts from at least one occupation that was there because of the lake.
The lake shore in that area..as with most old lakes in this state have loads of artifacts in and around them.

Thank You. So, how do I go about estimating the age of the artifacts, and the tribe they could have belonged to? . I searched online for tribes that existed in the area, I found a few, such as the Timucua, and Tocobaga but this was at the very edges of their range on the maps, and it was hard to say which one as a couple over lapped. We are close to the kissimmee river basin in central florida

Several of those pieces show signs of being heat treated... which is a very archaic trait and well before the time of tribes.
You will need to find a complete projectile point or at least a base to determine the age more precisely.
I guarantee they are there.
I would be all over that site if I were you!
I'm glad to hear you're sifting.
It looks just like the start of some of my best hunting sites.
Here is some Florida pottery for you to compare.
There is likely to be a mix of artifacts from different time periods there.

CRAP!!!!! That piece in the back, with those patterns...Thats what the big pieces i threw away looked like exactly! kicking my self now! I didnt realize what they were. There were about 5 pieces, around 4 to six inches. I may be able to find where I threw them. dang it. That map is helpful also. much better than the ones I found on wiki. I really appreciate everyone's willingness to tolerate a newbies ignorance and to be helpful in answering my questions. This is a great forum.

St Johns check stamp pottery.

One pretty good rule of thumb is.." where there's pottery there's points".. the fact that pottery is there usually means alot of time was spent there and it's not just a little lithic scatter at a campsite.

yup. here you go, its all three, but the big two are almost exactly the same on both sides, I think they were attached at one time they were 1/4 inch apart from each florida rocks 085.webpflorida rocks 076.webpflorida rocks 082.webpother.

makes sense.I found the big pieces of pottery a couple of feet from the two scrapers/blanks yesterday.

Very likely the same pot.
Put them in a bag together..I've been able to piece together many of the ones I've found on sites like that.
Looks like you have two rim pieces there.
I thought it was stone when I asked for a better view.. thank you for the closer look.

You are in a good spot , go over it real close. thanks for posting, and as being a newbie we all once was a newbie:thumbsup:HH

Well I have learned if you keep your finds in a bucket or Tupper ware bowl weather you think they might be rocks or not keep them. In about a yr or so you will be able to go back through your first finds and possibly realize some are artifacts. So keep them for now and then later go back and have a second look to see if you have found something. Hope to see more of your finds, rock
