I got a call from a farmer friend of mine last night, and he said he had just bought some more land and that he had found some of that Indian junk as he called it. He ask if I had the time to come and look around his new place. So I made the 1 1/2 hr. drive to this new place and he told me over the phone it was just a small place, well it was 5,200 acres that had been disked and rained on with 4in of rain. I wanted to stay all day but I just did not have the time. I only got to go over the area where he found stuff and that kept me glued to that one spot. 001.webp002.webp004.webp008.webpThe point was laying on top of the ground with pottery sticking out of the ground, so I did not go much farther. The coolest thing that I found were 2 fish vertebrate and from the style of pottery I can date this to the Coles Creek culture 1000-1100 AD Late woodland , just when the bow was being introduced. I found one piece of pottery were they had tied a twisted small cord in all directions around it before they fired it. I will be going back to this place some more, they still are going to disk it 2 more times and then row it up and let it lay for the winter. The pottery pile photo is bottom left just plain pieces, above that pieces with design, bottom right rim pieces and I did not keep all that I found in a 3ft sq. hole that was only 1ft deep. Thanks for looking.

That's going to be a great spot I bet if he ever bottom plows that place you will find much older stuff with that pottery everywhere it was probably good ground that was used for a very long time.
Are you sure that cord marked pottery wasn't marked with a paddle with cord wrapped around the paddle?
Nice finds

You may be right on that Gator, here is a photo of the piece. Tell me what you think, it's the first time I have found a piece made like this.012.webp What you are saying makes sense, that way they could reuse it.

Gotta love new dirt,Ill be hitting some tommorow, Nice Finds!

Nice stuff Ed! That must be an awesome phone call to receive. "Indian junk", if he only knew what people pay for this "junk". I was at a show today. I saw some great artifacts... I mean "junk"!

From the photo it looks incised by hand... Can you see spiral cord marks inside the grooves?
If not I would say that's incised

Here are some examples the first are what I mean by spiral cord marks next are a few incised pieces

i hear that...she left her car keys in the woman's restroom at a wedding 300 miles from home....my fault....I didn't wake her up to go to the post office to get them when they were mailed registered post...my fault...she got down to the post office (which is closed on Saturdays anyway) and sweet talked her way in to get them anyway....but with only about 5 min. before they were leaving on the route...my fault....

hell, she got the dam keys back!!! but i am in the dog house. looks like i am sleeping in the barn tonight...again...

That's pretty great monsterrack, pretty colored arrowhead....& something to look forward to is always NICE.

Yes sir new ground awesome new spot boss and sweet point !!!

Looks like it's probably a village site... Probably some "lumps" there before it got turned into a farm field.
I'm pretty sure I see shell material in the photo of the point on the ground... Those shells can go a long way to creating a neutral pH soil which does a great job of preserving bone you may find some really neat bone artifacts there also

Wow! That is so exciting! Hope you get back to it soon.
