New guy from New Jersey, needs help with Garrett g-500

Hi, I have been hoping to acquire a metal detector for about 20 years, and today it happened. I don't know much at all about the hobby, so I am eager to learn. My interest is mainly civil war, but I would be happy finding anything. I have a Garrett g-500 which I know nothing about that I got at an auction, I also have a second one missing the pole piece, if any one knows where to get a cheap replacement. Any help or suggestions on my detector or the hobby in gereal are awesome, thanks.

Welcome fellow NJ MD'er, I new to the forum myself. I had a Garrett G500 about 10 yrs. ago, nice machine, but I suggest pratice in your yard, get to knew the different quirks. Did pretty good in parks and ballfields with it, paid for itself in no time.
