I am in the stage of doing research and require some help.

I am a native of central Texas, and come to find out gold can be found here. I have read of going out towards Llano and also south towards the Guadalupe, and east towards Bastrop. I am trying to find a good starting point any ideas? it seems to me that Llano is quite overrun with prospectors, is Bastrop a possibility.

I am also looking at the type of equipment to use. Obviously panning is a must but I was looking for secondary options as well. It would seem to me that utilizing the creek and a sluce box would be a good idea any expert opinions would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Travis ???

There ya go I agree. I was a miner for 3 years before I joined the GPAA.
The first 2 claims I went to I found more gold in 4 days than I did in the first 3 years.
Then again Cal is loaded with gold...still.

I started mining like this.
1. Realized I was in gold country when I was Camping in Yosemite.
2. They had Gold Pans in the camping supplies in the local drug store for $3
3. I had a 5 gal. bucket and a full size shovel at camp.
4. I asked a Elder local if there is gold in the Merced River.

Visitor Activities:
Whitewater rafting (Class III-V), hiking, camping, picnicking, nature study, hobby gold prospecting, wildflower viewing, birding, and swimming.
Merced River Recreation Area Map (pdf 478 kb)

He just said "Yes" and walked away.
Then.
5. The water was 39º, but who cares, I dove in with a swim mask and a bucket and took gravel from the deepest place I had.
And you know what ...I scared the trout.
When I got out of the water with a half a bucket, my kids said I was all pink and blue(no wet suit).
I didn't know how to pan , but that didn't stop me.
In 1 hour I panned the gravel back into the Merced.
I found nothing , and I was still excited.
What is that all about?
By God I had GOLD FEVER.
That was almost 20 years ago and I'm still excited.
