Got up early & packed our lunch as the new land is a massive 45mins away  We only had one field left that was not in crop, it was huge. We started nearest the old roman road without much joy. I did my usual bloodhound thing & went to sniff out a good area. Dad was left behind. I found an area which had slightly darker soil, 1 piece of pot & 1 bit of lead. That was enough for me to start gridding. By lunch time I had a 1675 Charles II Penny (my first ever) & 3 roman coins. Dad at the other end of the field saw my universal sign for 'come over' when I was gridding. He had found nothing & we stopped for lunch, more importantly I had found where we were to consentrate our efforts.

After lunch the Roman coins flowed & Dad had two roman silver before I got my first. Then we had to decided to grid left or right. We both agreed left & got many more items:

28 roman bronze coins - most in 1 day this year.
4 Roman silver - Most in 1 day EVER (Beat last years 8 & made our 10 target)
(Caracalla AD195-217 & 3 clipped Siliqua of the 4th century)
Part of a Roman steel yard weight (balance arm)
Medieval Sword Chape

Roman Bronze Knife Terminal of MARS - no.4 on my wish list (3rd item I have found off my top 6 wish list all this year!)

whats the top left bronze? it looks like a catholic symbol, which is on the holly comunion bread! :-[ i can't remember what it's called :tard:
i should be ashamed of myself ;D

Well spotted, its 'chi roh' Christian symbol. That coin is a rare one & books at £350. Although this is worth very little with a poor reverse, but more importantly it fills a gap in the album.

now, if I could only find a field like that over here I'd be pumped LOL

Spectacular day ! I thought Charles I was dead by 1675, could that be Charles II ? Or do I have my history mixed up ?

Good point its the II, I will correct the rest. The give away should have been the II on the coin :D I'm to used to dating coin weights with a 'C' on it. This coin as I said is the first I have had, so not familar with them yet.

Those are so awesome!! WTG!

Great finds again Cru, just great. You and Cru'dad seem to be cleaning up this year! Congrad for all the finds. And 4 silver roman and so many bronze!

Awesome hunt and finds, congrats on the Roman silvers! HH, Mike

Why do these silly farmers think crops are more important than historical artifacts?? Perhaps they don't think about metal detecting every 6 seconds...

I would love to lend you my 2box for a while to scan your fave areas for even deeper treasures. The 2box is light, I'll gladly ship it to you for a jaunt over English soil. Goes down as far as 5 feet! It's a White's brand, light, easy to use and is not getting any action here, in a box stored away. It would love to be put to use.

Thanks for the offer. It maybe worth PM-ing Tyre Kicker with the same deal. He's looking for the Edward III Hoard & needs a deeper machine (in my opinion). I would only really need one if I had a potential hoard. Otherwise I'm happy digging in the plough soil.

Congratulations, that is a nice bunch of coins and artifacts!!

Nice digs crusader

If you get tired of some of those roman coins let me know:)

Very impressive Crusader! Your posts, as usual, have that jawdropping quality about them. That is dream detecting to the n-th degree! The Mars knife handle is beautiful and quite breathtaking. My father is from Devon, ever detected there?

We used to holiday in Devon when I was a kid. I detected the beaches a couple of times but never had much. Never tried the ploughed fields of Devon but it would be worth doing.

Beautiful finds. :)
