TEKNETICS T-2 LTD, Fisher F-75, White's MXT w/ 11 x 14" Excelerator Coil, WHITES Pulse TDI, WHITES Beach Hunter ID, Garrett Propointer and Lesche Digging Tool
Primary Interest:
All Treasure Hunting
I live in Norfolk, Virginia and detect mostly on the Peninsula and surrounding Tidewater areas. I am looking to buy either the Tesoro Cibola (no GB) or the Tesoro Vaquero. Now, is our soil here such that it would be benificial to buy the Vaquero which has ground balancing? Because if not i am leaning towards the Cibola for its faster sweeping speed. Any input would be apprieciated.

You need the Vaquero and GB being so close to the ocean.

Depending on what you're planning on hunting for. If relic hunting may be a possibility, then you might look at the Tejon as well with it's manual G.B. I haave both the Cibola and the DeLeon which has the t.i.d. that I like to play with once in a while, doing the guessing game as to who's right before digging.

I have an Ace 250, which has TID, and most of the time it jumps around. And even the times it belltones a coin, I get foil and pulltabs. I have opted for sound only as a better discriminator once you get used to it. The LCD tries, and is useful for the newbie (myself included), but VCO is much more accurate for me. Some detectors are starting to "talk" to you now. Where's the adventure in that?

Stoney is right on about the Tejon being the choice. It has a faster sweep speed and response. Anytime you can get a manual ground balance, do so. Automatic is nice, but is it fun on your car?

Using a fast sweep speed for most detectors is like running it with sensitivity turned off. You will get better coverage at a fair speed and lots of over lapping instead of relying on making a percentage sweep. (cover ground fast, find more surface coins)

Since it looks like you will be searching for civil war relics I would also recommend the Tejon. No meter, but with the dual discriminators it is not needed. This machine is almost as deep as my Minelab Explorer. Last year my Explorer, which is a $1000 plus detector went on the blink. I quickly did some research and focused in on the Tesoro Tejon. I used the Tejon during the Spring of last year and found many minnies, buttons, scabbard tips and other items. When I got my new Minelab in late summer I went back to that field and found almost nothing. The Tejon found almost everything, and the price is right.

The Tejon was recommended to my by Dixie Metal Detectors over the other Tesoro brands, the person I talked to said one of the machines he uses is the Tejon. It is a very fast recovery machine and uses a gain which amplifies the signals. It is easy to set up, correct manual ground balance is essential for great deptch, it has a great price.

This machine found over 75 dropped 69's; five half dimes; 25 buttons; round balls; scabbard tips; and very small buckshot. It also can very quickly find sites by turning the discrimination down to iron. My Minelab can find all the above but completely cancels out the iron objects. Great if coin hunting. Not so great if hunting for relics.

Great machine; great price

Hey Sentinel. Definitely the Tejon first or the Vaquero second. Too many relics to pass up and these are great relic detectors. I sell and use them and they are awsome. Manual GB is not so bad once you learn it. It's what will get you the depth you want in oyur case. Let me know if you need help with your purchase.
