On Tuesday I did a service call on a farm and the guy was a nice as you could hope for so I easily received permission for over 1600 acres. I did a bit of research and was excited to see there could be as many as a dozen early land grants dating from 1678 to the mid 18th century criss crossing his fields. Most of the land is nice and high and dry too. So yesterday Jo and I started the search for an early site. The first few hours produced nothing but we did stumble onto a few dropped coins. Jo got a 1858 half dime and a 1947 silver Washington quarter. I got a nice 1915-D Barber quarter, an Indian head penny and a wheat. Finally as we were about to switch fields we checked a gentle rise and viola, brick and shell. Meager finds but no doubt a 200+ year old site. Among the finds a couple spent coppers and the tiniest cut piece of Spanish silver I've ever found. It appears to be a wee sliver of a bust 1 reale. I can make out the"D" of Dei Gratia and the outline of Carlos's face. Looking forward to getting back, hopefully this weekend. But we dont have much time left as the farmers are busy preparing the planting.
