new project, looking for equipment advice

What particular era coins?
Spare BCs as lift bags - pretty hard on equipment if you are working around sort of structure, but anything that will hold air will provide buoyancy. Lift bags are a lot more controllable as far as I am concerned.
 

Regarding the detector: really depends on the environment and the objective. Different tools for different purposes. How physically tough does it have to be and what does it have to do - just go beep for all metals, or only on some metals? How large are the objects you are looking for and how deep is the overburden etc. And no they are not cheap, but using the right tool can be worth the extra expense.
 

Whites surf pi is your best. Forget minelab excaliber
 

Bcd's as lift bags are ok but anything that 1 BC will lift you can usually drag up or tie a rope to it and pull it up like a fish trap.

More than 1 BC starts to get very squirrelly so careful with that. A lift bag or drum is always better
 

What about a Tesoro Sand Shark? Its PI, good for 200ft. Decent price. What's not to love?
 

I just got a Tesoro sand shark. I haven't used mine yet but haven't heard anything bad about them. They have a life time warranty and have good depth, But they pick up everything. They are a P I detector not able discriminate any metals out and if your ok with used they can be had for about $350 to $400

If you love the hunt ( don't mind finding everything, they are terrific) if you hate finding " everything" it can be a pain using one.....and disheartening too for the same reason....

Sads have you used a Minelab Excalibur II?
 

I have a PI (sea hunter) I use while diving and it does hit on all metal, but you learn. Just picked up a DetectorPro HH Underwater and will be trying it out underwater this year. So far on land its working out well.

Hmmm. What about tiger shark. Not great in the surf, but what about using for diving?
Has anyone tried it?

I have a Tiger Shark that I've taken diving. I'm still getting used to using it, but it's been a really fun way for me to get back into diving. I have done a lot of shallow water work with it using a scoop, and a bunch of dives with it using my hands to sift through the lake bottom. Warning: you will find a lot of cans & bottlecaps!

My buddy has a Minelab Excalibur. It has 5 knobs on it. I could never get it tuned just right. I have the Aquapulse. Just 2 knobs.

The best book on Spanish colonial coins is "The Practical Book of Cobs" by Daniel Frank Sedwick. Everyone should have a copy.
 

It may sound a bit odd, but the US Army rubberized waterproof clothing bags work very well as lift bags and they are relatively cheap.
