I went out to Riverside today to try my luck at an old park. I set the disc down to less than a nickel because I was hoping to come across a buffalo or even a V-nickel, in addition to silver coins. Near some trees I get a very solid signal, turned the disc up a bit to check it, turned it up again, and then all the way to max, and the signal was still very strong. So I pinpointed it with the 12x10 coil (I'm started to get the hang of this coil) and down about 3" I pulled out a huge, thick ring.
The first thing that popped up at me was what I thought appeared to be a large black onyx stone, surrounded by a gold bezel. The rest of the ring, however, looked like tin metal. I figured it just may be a junk ring. I took it home, washed it up, and noticed that I had a .925 sterling silver ring with 14k gold bezel! So the stone must be a genuine onyx. I have never dug a silver ring so tarnished that it looked like junk metal, but I guess there's a first time for everything.
Apparently the ring was made in 1989, and total weight was 11.8 grams. I can't yet read the rest of the writing on the inside, but once I give it a good cleaning and polishing I'll try to take more pics.
I also found a 1950s wheatie, and a damaged silver dangling earring in the playground area.
Oh, and BY THE WAY...whoever it was that was detecting in Riverside, just east of Market St. where some old houses are being relocated from their lots, you had better LEARN to fill in your holes. Those three lots and easement areas looked like a bunch of mini-mortar rounds had pounded the ground. It doesn't matter if the houses are being relocated, don't be a lazy bum and make the rest of us look bad...FILL IN YOUR HOLES!! For goodness sakes, it only takes a second to swipe the dirt back in with your shoe!
