New to it all!

Well I haven't found any kind of introduction board so I figured i would do it here.

I have been interested in US history, naval/pirate history, and general treasure hunting since i was a child. I did a lot of research on things back then and was quite interested. I did not get any support from my family and was told it was just a dream so after a year I quit researching.

I am now 25 and just took my open water scuba class. (not going to get certified until summer... brrr) well some of the things the instructor talked about REALLY got me thinking about this stuff again. Now i know the season for us Minnesotans is basically over but that doesn't stop the knowledge gathering. Which i'm getting a lot of on here.

Anyway. My plan and hope is to buy and Ace 250 metal detector. I still don't know if i can use this in water at all or if i have to get a new one. But i'll find out before i use it. . I plan on detecting on dry land, swim area "beaches" and in the water around it, and once i get my advanced scuba and get some more sub certs under that i plan on diving to find things.

One of the exciting ones i would like to try and find is a casino boat that sunk up around alexandria mn. Other than that i just hope to find enough coins to justify the expense to my wife who is a bit skeptical but supportive.

The Ace 250 is not a water detector. The detector can be used in water UP TO the control box as the coil is waterproof. And your wife thinks you're dreaming? Yes, I've been a detecting nut for 19 yrs now and I've found some might neat items. I have a Whites DFX (Pd $874 new) and I have easily paid for it 3X over....NOT including the good coins I keep. Well.... Its going on three years since I have joined this site... I have NOT gotten a MD yet, got a silver dime out of a pile of coins I decided to look through, and still in love with it. I have joined another group of "treasure" hunters called geocaching. While doing that I have observed two guys out detecting, one older gentleman going through a park cleaning up everything he hit on with his ace 250 (if I remember correctly) and a younger guy with a garrett 550 going through a park near where a geocache was hidden. Of course this brought the bug back for me, found a cheap ($150) ace 230 near my area on craigslist, which has only been used once.

AFTER dreaming (literally) AAALLLLLLLL night about detecting I think I have to go and get this...... TODAY!!!!

Are you in Clay County? I saw a post by you someplace, but not sure I can find it now. You were looking for info on a "ghost town" that was supposed to be near Glyndon. I assume that if Clay county has a historical museum it would probably be in Moorhead. That would be a place I would look if you have exhausted looking for info on the internet. If you Google any county and you looked at the "Wikipedia Info" for a certain county, it will list the major cities, then the smaller ones, and the unincorporated ones and sometimes what they refer to as "populated places". There are some "ghost towns" like Downer, Dale, Rollag, Winnepeg Junction, and Muskoda in Clay County. Also Averill on the Railroad(RR) at the intersection of CR19 and CR93 is referred to as a ghost town in some references.
I have the entire collection(Ten volumes) of the United States Treasure Atlas that was published by a Thomas P. Terry in about 1984. It lists every US county by state and lists what was considered GT(Ghost towns) or NGT(Near Ghost towns). Of course the demographics have changed in the last 28 years. Some places have disappeared from present days maps and others have become more populated. If you want info on neighboring counties and their "ghost towns" I can do lookups. For Clay County the major towns are: Moorhead, Barnesville, Dilworth, Glyndon, Felton, Hawley , Ulen, Sabin, Kragnes. Rustad, Downer and Rollag are unincorporated. Dale, Muskoda and Winnepeg Junction are Ghost Towns. Other municipalities are: Georgetown(129), Hitterdal(201), Comstock(93), Baker(55).

WOW! I do live in Clay County! Very nice books you have. I know the first 8 towns you have listed there and Downer. The post you are refering to is talking about the city of Yeovil. I am unable to find the original photos/maps I had observed this city in. It was directly east of Glyndon. According to some of the responses I have gotten on that thread it is now Hawley, but in one of the maps I looked at Hawley was listed as well as Yeovil. I will visit the Historical society in Moorhead since I drive by it everday at work I should finally stop by and visit.
