New to metal detecting

I took my detector out today for the first time and all i seem to find is bottle caps, Allot of bottle caps I think back in the day a dump truck must have deposited them here in my yard. I guess I need to learn how to discriminate them out but good grief. well on the bright side, guess the detector works and the pinpoint is real close to being dead on. discovery 3300 the 99.00$ bargain

Welcome tabsrus. Keep after it and do not give up. The first year I went to the beach with a detector about all I found were bottlecaps. In my yard it was pull tabs. About a year and a half later I can identify these and usually do not dig them any more.

Set your sensitivity lower and practice in that test garden. You will begin to learn the sounds.

I am also from East TN. Dayton to be exact. If you are close maybe we can hunt together sometime.

if you keep digging an never seem to find it,I can almost bet your pin point is off.Being that you are new at this pin pointing can be tricky, sometimes even throws the best of us off.Most coins will be less then 6" an if you have a coin reading an your past the 6" I bet you missed your pin point.One other thing that can make it hard on a new pesron is a large target buried deep, a aluminum can for instance, at 10" + deep will have a coin reading. A test garden will help you alot, but make sure you put in it an area with no signals.I would plant objects less than 5" for now, then you can always go back an plant a little deeper if you feel the need.A more expensive machine will not help you alot , you will still have to learn that machine also, but after you master this machine going to a diffrent machine will be much easier.It took me months before I got to were I can pin point dead on (95%) of the time.

If you are detecting goffer holes then part of the problem may be the disturbed soil. Some detectors if you are running them hot dont like disturbed soil and will false on you.

Hey Tabs - I am also brand spanking new to this. I live just north of the tri-cities area in SWVA. I just put my MINELAB Sovereign GT together Tuesday and took it for a test drive yesterday. Spent just under an hour at the local fair grounds intentially looking for clad to get my confidence up. after figuring out some basics, I ended up with 9 pennies and 2 dimes. I also learned real quick the difference in the tone of a coin verses a pull tab, but I dug everything anyway. I am hitting this site again this evening to get some more practice in before I hit some good sites I have already researched.

Thats how ya do it. Dig it all,fill in the holes, and remove all the junk. Sometimes the machine will lie to ya, just to keep you on your toes. Keep diggin'.
