NEW TO THE USA... Gold Panning California

I recently moved to USA from England and needing a new hobby...i got gold panning fever...does anyone have an idea where my husband can fish and i can gold pan withing 150miles of zip 94401 (san mateo) california
we would like to just take a drive, see a river/lake/stream we can stop without needing permission, my husband does have a valid fishing licience..we dont want to go to a recreation park/centre where they teach you/show you around, we'd like to just take our time and not have to be limited to time, if anyone had an idea where to go i would be so grateful

debsy66, the east bay regional parks might have fishing opportunities, but there's not going to be any gold panning, I don't think. The topography of that part of CA doesn't lend itself to naturally occuring gold.
